I don't think it completely made the Gameboy famous, but Pokemon certainly attributed a large amount of PR for the system during the Pokemon craze. I know tons of people who bought a GB, GBC, GBA and now a DS just for Pokemon.

I agree that pokemon did indeed generate a massive percentage of total PR for nintendo and even now, i find random people playing pokemon on their gba, gbc,ds etc. When I first knew about gameboy, it was not because of mario, but because of pokemon >.<

Yes the pokemon franchise made gameboy famous because if your as much of a video game nerd as me you'd know that gunpey yokoi diveloped the original gameboy and shigeru myamoto fired him because he pushed the release date and gunpey went off to make his own company and it released games almost identical to the gameboy ones for the wonderswan but no pokemon (unless you count digimon but i don't because the wonderwan digimon games could never compete with pokemon) and the company eventually failed.

i bought my first handheld (gbc) just for pokemon. but i've branched out. i'm pretty sure that initially, back when pokemon was just getting off the ground, it was the catalyst that got a huge chunk of my generation into gaming.

pokemon ,zelda and super mario were the most sucesseful games in gameboy history. pokemon broke the records, cause anyone that got a gameboy (at least that i know), got any version of pokemon.

Definitly mostly cause gameboys are used as car ride toys and since kids are the ones sitting there, there the ones who are using them

Yeah they're doing pretty well since the Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire out sold more than any other GBA's.

Pokemon alone didn't make nintendo famous - The wide variety of games, aggressive marketting, and low prices really set it off.Look at the competition - Sony Playstation and Sega Genesis. Both are okay (Sega was cool), but they didn't use their resources wisely.

For the gameboy yes. For the GBA, no. Super Mario made the GBA worthwhile.
