I love video game music, but I've found that it's lost it's importance and quality over the years. I can never get into the music from newer games. But anything before the year 2000 will always have great scores to me.

I think so. Even if it is just something plain. Because otherwise you get too bored, or easily distracted and the game isn't as entertaining or high up in your mind.

to be honest, i require good music for games these days, FFVII raised the bar singlehandedly, and so did Tony Hawk alongside Twisted Metal Black with hits appropriate to the game. not to mention all the PC games (Command and Conquer especially) with homebrew soundtracks. On the other hand, remember when game music was there to just annoy you and make it harder to concentrate? although tetris was really catchy...

To me, music has a right to be in some games like Madden, NBA live and sports games. But if I recall correctly one of the best games of the past couple years, Fallout 3, really didn't have any music in the game unless you turned on the radio on the pipboy. And I feel that without music the game was not hurt in any way.

I agree with the thread creator that game music is important in setting the atmosphere.A game might be less fun if there's no music when there's something important happening in the game. (Like getting chased by Scissor Boy in Clock Tower)

music ties a mood to the visual and the player(you) together. Many good games have legendary and notable music and many series has the best hands down. Pokemon, Zelda, final fantasy and I'd even argue disgaea; it sets a cartoony world with serious concepts of what a true hero should go through.

Yes it can set up a great atmosphere in a game, however there is a chance that it can get too repititive and then become bland (think AVGN 'Friday the 13th', 'Ghostbusters', and 'Nightmare on Elmstreet' all on nes). However there are people, such as myself, who never use music because we're usually playing under the covers or on a time limit and the less they hear from us the easier it is for them to forget.

I kind of have a penchant for soundtracks of all kinds, and games are no exception!A well-scored game is a thing of beauty and a joy of awesomeness. But some kinds of games really shine with their sounds, whereas others are sadly lacking. (That was kind of a "duh" statement, but bear with me. :) ) The music for the Final Fantasy series is among the finest gaming music out there (piano collections and everything), but the music for the original SimTown definitely leaves something to be desired. The Smash Bros players among us can appreciate some of the cool choices on certain levels - the symphonic version of Kirby's theme is actually a lovely piece, and smashing is all the more fun to the sounds of the F-Zero or Pokemon theme. Even something dark and dreary like the score to American McGee's Alice shows a level of skill and sophistication that one can enjoy both during and after play.Of course, you've got some games where sound just ain't so important ... Tetris, for example. In these cases, the game doesn't suffer from lack of music ... it just benefits from the minimalist style. :gs:

This person 100% shares my thoughts on this. The Final Fantasy music is the best example, as mentioned above. Most consoles need awesome game music to brighten up the atmosphere. The bigger-screen consoles demand more, however. For example, a PS2/PS3 would need music more than a GBA/PSP. That's the feeling I get, at least. For some reason, the smaller the 'screen' is, the less 'excited' you can get. Perhaps some of you would agree with this statement? In a game, the battle music is the most important(to me). Basically, the suitable battle music would make you feel more 'in the mood' to enjoy the experience. Final Fantasy, Persona 4, Disgaea and the like are good examples. But, just like Benji above said, certain games don't matter. It just doesn't contribute to the 'goodness' of the game.

Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Norihiko Hibino (MGS3), Hideki Okugawa (SF3:Third Strike) just to name a few. I can't even imagine these games without their musical genius behind them.

The music in a game isn't all that important to me since i can mute it and listen to my own music, but good music that fits the situation, like in almost all areas of Zelda games, can help me with liking the game enough to play it again.

To me, music is VERY IMPORTANT. It creates the atmosphere of the game.I like to know your opinions on game music

not just in games, music is very important everywhere. as you say, it creates the atmosphere of the game, level, situation, event etc. however, it is also often overlooked. when people talk about games, movies, or anything where music is involved, they almost always leave the discussion of music out even though music generally plays non-stop in almost all games and movies.

The music is probably what made the Final Fantasy series so good... along with the gameplay, characters, depth of story, etc...
