Gamers don't have to be nerds because im popular at school i got like 720 friends at my school out of 1000 ppl but i dont think im a hotshot or a showoff i just like games...

Well, there's a term called "deviance". For starters, people tend to criticize what they can't or won't understand, or rather not melding with the norms of the society. This example is as such.

Im a gamer.. and i play lots of other stuff too, one of the reasons im (kinda popular) in school is cause im real good in SSMBM and other video games

Man, that is weird...I used to hang around with the "so called" nerds in my school, and they were great people, we're still good friends, we used to play Rpg during the breaks, but no one ever called me Nerd...^^"Or if they did, they never had the guts to tell me (which pretty much loses the point of calling someone nerd, the humilliation...) but I was never one of the popular ones...which was awesome!

Then in college, I always went with a band t-shirt (Black Sabbath, Maiden, etc) and they never labeled me as a Headbanger/Metalhead/Gothic...everyone has treated me very nice...maybe it's a whole new maturity I wasn't expecting from the same kind of person that used to mistreat nerds in High School...what I say is...when someone calls you a Nerd, you have two options: Ignore, or be smart picking the words for a retaliaton...

Maybe because true gamers live in their own egotistical bubble, thinking that they're the 1337357 person on Earth. But most people nowadays play videogames, and no one hates on them. If you're a reject at school it's because you're an all-around loser, not because you play video games.

Not all gamers are called nerds, it differs whether you game a lot or game all the time even in the night and I think it also got to do with how you look compared to sterotype of a "nerd look". I think it is a bit justified to call someone a nerd if he/she does nothing else like sitting behind a computerscreen. I mean sleep, healty food, fresh air, sports or a hobby besides gaming and even school sometimes are important

Gamers aren't nerds. Nerds are glasses wearing book smart people who have nothing else to do at home then study. Gamers are people who play for fun or competition. Gamers who have too much extensive knowledge at one game/series can also be called Geeks but not Nerds

Well, unless you spend almost all your time playing games i don't see why you should be called a nerd. I don't think regular gamers are nerds since some games really need alot of brain work.

There're always extremists in every thing we do.So unless you practically game an average more than 80% of your day away then I dont believe you'll be called a gaming nerd.Normal humans game. But on different platforms I guess

I think because....people are just plain stupid.. they do what they want and we do what we want. But as long as you do well in school, play sports, and go have fun, then gaming is always good on the side.
