Why are gamers called nerds?

Gamers are called nerds because other people get the impression that all we do is play video games instead of asking what our hobbies are.

interesting... where i come from, us gamers are usually called geeks! we call nerds people who act/look like a stereotypical nerd... which ive seen many of but i refuse to call them nerds to their face i doubt anyone wants to be labeled a nerd unless they label themselves it first

ur mixed up a bitthe geeks are the ones who show off their geekiness and dont carethe nerds are the ones who desperately try to hide it, but it still be plain to see.people only call others nerds cuz they lack wut nerds have. I think it just coz its not what they think is right...Thye don't see anything else other than what they want or thinkI am a gamer. I am proud of it. And because of that, I´m a reject in school.What do people have against us gamers?

Well some see gaming as an anti-social activity, not in a destructive way, just because it used to just involve one person mashing away at a gamepad for hours on end or w/e but now with the internet being a major part that's nonsense. Bottom line is because it makes you different amongst the crowd and there will always be idiots who stereotype.

Gamers in my country aren't being called nerds..that is, as long as you spend some times for your social activityBut you don't have to assume (which many people did) that you have to begood in sports, (every people has it's own abilities) you can just chat to them as you did post in this forum..coz many people said that i'm an expert in playing gamesbut nobody has ever called me nerds..That's my own experience and opinion by the way.

only the "cool" people diss gamers, because they wish they could play games all day, but their frinds say its dumb or their parents dont allow computer games in their house. GAMERS RULE.

I always was the lead gamer in my school, but then again that was a High school with (dun dun dun) the majority of the student body had a maturity level of about 25. I'll admit, I play games, it's about all I do in my spare time. Of course then again, I'm good at them, and not much else interests me really. (apart from going to college to learn how to make games myself of course)To the original question, I think that gamers are called nerds because they are, in a sense, the nerds of the 21st century. Being a nerd isn't necessarily a bad thing though. While the term 'Nerd' generally has a negative connotation, most people seem to ignore the positive parts of being a nerd. Most nerds are very smart, and in our world that will put them ahead.

I think it's a stereotype that has less truth in society today than in used to, video games are the second most popular media next to music. Too much of the population play games to be able to make blanket statements like "gamers are nerds."

Nerds are the people that spend everyday on the internet on rpg games. Gamers are anyone who owns, or has access to consoles with games, that spend much of their time on them.

Yeah, what Underclass Hero said. There is a major difference between a "casual gamer", a "gamer" and a "nerd/geek" which can be interchanged. Back in the 80's when there was the Atari and all that, if you played it you was just about a nerd. But since the mid 90's when gaming became acceptable in pop culture and just about everyone has a console in the home, it's not the matter of if you play, but what kind of games you play. FPS, Sports Games, Action Games, and Grand Theft Auto contribute to cool points. But if you have a party over at your house and your friends find your Final Fantasy collection, your WoW manual, anything made by Atlus, and anything that must be played in 5 hour no break stints, that takes away a whole lot. But who cares what they say! Play till your hearts content or until you really gotta go to the bathroom!

man honestly, gamers r not nerds as long as u find a solid balance, dont be spending yoru summer inside playing a game everyday man, go out, im sure u have friends, everyones got one, at least get outside, if not for excersize, then to at least go to gaming stores for new games:D

In all reality, anyone who calls a gamer a nerd because they play games, is probably a nerd themselves, because everyone, at sometime in their life will probably play a video game. Whether that is yesterday, tomorrow, 5 years from now.... It just will happen. So don't listen to what others say. They are just being hypocriticial.
