I prefer Japanese subtitles over English if it's done by groups like ADV where they recycle an English cast over every anime. Gets tiring after awhile. There are other exceptions though. Anime dubbed by Ghibli tends to be exceptional, except for anime like Porco Rosso.

It's obvious that the Japanese voice acting with subs will own the English dubbing considering that the voices are usually chosen to fit the character in the former. English voice actors can't match the Japanese in quality and quantity although there are good ones out there; those in the game "Tales of Symphonia" being an example.

I've always preferred the japanese voice actors with subs. A bad English dub always puts me off something...

i find subtitles only work if your watching the right kind of anime movie, take Steam Boy for example, not the best anime film in the world but the english voice actors are terrible and it ruins the whole feel of the film.

Well sometimes the english dub can be good or rarely better in my opinion, but most of the time its jap dub + subtitles ftw.

I think the subbed shows are better because there isn't any corporate censorship

English dubs almost always sound horrible and off on the timing. Definitely going with the subs (Also had training while watching chinese soap episodes with mom).

Japanese voice w/ subtitles is better. Better acting and the such and the DUB is usually just messed up. Look at One Piece taken by 4Kids... That got screwed...

Japanese with subtitles, english dubs are horrible. They sound so tacky and sometimes the voice doesn't move nicely to the animation. and I like listening to Japanese better as well and you learn some stuff too.

English dub is useless. Let me tell you why in a very systematic approach. With Japanese, most people in the USA don't understand it so they have to read the subtitles, and they don't always like reading. Okay, it has it's ups and downs. With English dubs, 99% of the time, the voices are so terrible you have to mute the sound, then which you can't hear anything and can't understand so you'll be forced to put subtitles on or watch without knowing a thing that's happening.Hmm, I think I would prefer to have the Japanese sound :P. Yes, dubs suck terribly.

Indeed. Often the voices don't match up to the animations, which is bad. Really bad. Also, often the voices are trying to be made to portray the character/their personality, but they do a bad job. One example is Sanji from One Piece... the DUB sounds so bad... I just keep using One Piece because it's just one of the examples. How about Naruto, "believe it!" it just doesn't sound good at all. =/

The only time I even liked an English Dub was Cowboy Bebop, otherwise I just stick to fansubbed anime.
