Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies. Princess Mononoke is just a beautiful story, and so is Grave of the Fireflies. Must see movies, in my opinion.

I like Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. I havent' seen Grave of the Fireflies yet. They say it's really good but also very sad... Kamikaze Girls is funny and crazy. I also recommend watching the second Umizaru movie. the story revolves around a Japanese Coast

Ah... Japanese Movies.... How I love them. Some of my favorites:- Battle Royale (Already mentioned, but I have to say I love it too! Warning: Not for children!)- Ringu (The original Japanese movie... not the American knockoff. Wonderfully done!)- Kamikaze Girls (An amusing bundle of criss-crossed stories combining to the grand daddy of all laughs!)- Moon Child (If you are a fan of J-Rock stars Gackt and Hyde, this is a must see for the dreamboat vampire rock stars!)- Kage no Tsuki (Another J-rock starred film, Hyde sings his way into the heart of the female lead from beyond the grave, and it is up to her friends to save her. A touching romantic tale!)- Nana (Movie based on the manga, and a great way to spend a lazy afternoon.)Or if you just want a couple of movies that will leave you thinking "... what?!" while rolling on the floor laughing with your friends (Warning: Most of these are violent in a bad movie sort of way):- Machine Girl (Mmm... Tempura...)- Versus (Zombie gangsters from the past... future... curse... wait... Okay! No more hair flipping!)- Yo Yo Girl Cop (Umm... who the heck can't use a yo yo? How many times has she hit herself with that thing now? (Side note: It stars the girls from Morning Musume!))- Casshern (Lense flare Go!!! Oh jedas my eyes! Wait... zombie clones? Huh?)- Battle Royale 2 (Less funny and more of the groaning why are we watching this again type of movie.)- PTU: Police Tactical Unit (Where did the plot go mommy? I don't know sweetheart. *I couldn't make it to the end of this one.)I would like to make a note that, while they are exceptionally good movies, Kung Fu Hustle and Curse of the Golden Flower are Chinese films. No offense meant to anyone, I just find Chinese films are very different from Japanese films. Too many years studying them in classes and writing papers on how the cultures affect the cinematography. >=)

If you still haven't seen Battle Royale (which, I bet would be impossible if you're a Japanese movie fan) go grab it BUT be wary of it's sequel, it's no that much fun...animated movie...any studio ghibli is a must watch, my personal fave is howl's moving castle :cool:the last manga-based movie I liked was Shinobi, it's the most polished ninja film I've seen so far, I didn't know it was based on basilisk at first (or was it?) and I thought it was really cool!but since I'm a shoujo fan I highly recommend Lovely Complex...it's so kawaii and funny throughout!

I recommend "twilight samurai" only watch it if you gonna watch it for the STORY because there is only 2 action scenes. first one being short cause the main character is PRO and the second action scene is a bit longer. this is my fav japenese movie though. not for people who want action.

I'd like to recommend Spirited Away, kinda old (from 2001 I think, but not sure). One of the best movies I've seen. But you know.. Bleach / Naruto movies are quite nice as well, even better if you've read the manga or watched the anime.

One of the movies that made it to the cinema: Kaiji:The Ultimate Gambler. It's based on a manga, and also truly amazing. You just have to wince when they fall off the kilometres-high tower.

You HAVE to watch Death Note! It's AMAZING!! There are two movies, and if you liked it, you can watch the anime. It's really interesting and it provokes discussion. Here's a website with the information about it.http://silentregrets.../death-note.phpYou can find the second movie on the same website.

If you're still paying attention (because I couldn't help but notice that the orginal post was made in 2007) I would like to recommend The Happiness of the Katakuris. Nothing beats a romantic, comedy, horror musical. Nothing. Also, I would like to add that Kung Fu Hustle as mentioned by understreet is Chinese, not Japanese. You can tell because most of the actors and people involved have single syllable surnames, which is more characteristic of Chinese people than Japanese.
