As I live in Southern California, we usually have earthquakes. In this case, I can't really say which one of the others is worse.

Tornadoes. The waters around here (northeastern US) are too cold to sustain a hurricane (though I've gotten hit with tropical storms (like Hanna back in 2008, Floyd in 2000, etc)). However, I've had a couple near misses with tornadoes. Back in 2006 a huge storm dropped a tornado on Long Island, 20 minutes after passing here, as well as in 2004, where I actually saw what could've been a funnel cloud outside my front door (it was ~2 towns away)

I think that tornadoes are worst because they have winds that go up to 500 mph.

I think hurricanes cause more damage and loss of property but since we have technology to watch and predict, there's a lot less loss of life unless people can't move to safe areas such as Pacific Islands. Tornadoes are shorter and harder to predict, they do more acute damage but because of that people are often taken unaware and even if they are in a "safe" location like a bathtub they can still get injured from flying debris. The final effects of severe hurricanes often lasts years (look at Katrina) just because the devastation is so much larger. I grew up in Hawaii and lived through a hurricane (Eva in 1982). It was a terrifying experience because we couldn't go anywhere and we couldn't get supplies in fast enough after the storm hit. Not to mention power was out or there were rolling blackouts for almost a month afterward. Now I live in Illinois where tornadoes are a threat every year. I have to say that they are both scary and fascinating. When I hear warnings, I get a mixed reaction: do I go to the basement like I'm supposed to or do I go to the window to see it?

Tornadoes are more common than hurricanes. Hurricanes happen over water and tropical climates while tornadoes happen around the planet a little more offten. A hurricane can be very distructive, maybe more distructive than a tornado but half the time it doesent even come near a place. On distruction wise a hurricane, on a more common acurrence tornado. So then it would be a hurricane would be my assumption.

A hurricane is much worse, because it has a area of effect much larger than a tornado and the consequences are longer. After a tornado is gone it's gone, but a hurricane leaves flooding and floatsam

A tornado can kill you if you get in it. A hurricane can also kill you but by objects it is blowing. You can actually keep safe fro a hurricane but not a tornado. So a tornado is worse.

I would say hurricane as well, just because it can do more damage over a bigger area in less time.

Well hurricanes hit a larger area while tornados do more damage in a cenralized area, but oveall hurricanes cause more deaths so I guess they win.

Hurricanes cover a huge area and does the most damage. I survived Hurricane Katrina ... by driving north and renting hotel in Tennesse for a week

tornandos are seriously worse than hurricanes because they are so unexpected that if you aren't prepared, who knows what could happen to you

in our country, we get battered by around 24-30 typhoons a year [typhoons are terms used in asian regions but hurricanes are their names in the west], so i'd say it has to be the tornado, cause anything that the funnel touches is dead meat[almost anything i guess].you dont have much time to prepare for it and even if you have a concrete house it still takes on much damage frm it.

This is interesting...A tornado does more focused damage, mainly around the base of the funnel and where the ruined stuff that gets spat out and lands... A hurricane, does way more widespread damage to anything and everything. Living in england i never seen either, just bad weather, lucky for me.

Definitely a questiong to ponder about.... I definitely wouldn't want to be caught by a tornado...depending on the category of the hurricane I think you can live through it.... but its still pretty destructive. But if I have to choose, I definitely go for tornado is worse.

hurricane because it lasts longer than a tornado and can destroy a larger area of land

The tornado is the lesser of two evils. A tornado is capable of tearing through buildings, but hurricanes cover various places at once. They last for days, and normally result in massive quantities of damage.

i say tornado. the sheer instantaneous destructive power of a tornado makes it worse cuz if it hits your house, you're screwed, while a house has a better chance of riding out a hurricane

A hurricane is worse, the potential for damage a hurricane can cause is quite a lot higher than a tornado.

I think tornadoes are worse because of the fact that not long after a hurricane hits land, it stops.

I think that hurricanes are more dangerous. The reason why i think that is because the problems that a tornado brings have an easier solution. The fact that we know the solution and don't do anything about it is what scares me.

wow i just learned about this in earth science today. ok, technically tornadoes are more destructive and can cause more damage, but the majority of them are only a mile big and only last about 10 minutes. hurricanes usually last for several hours, and are much larger then an average tornado, but not as destructive, so it really depends on where the tornado/hurricane hits and the way you look at it. also, a lot of tornadoes are formed from a hurricane so they have the power of the hurricane plus more, which is maybe why they are even more devastating when they hit
