I've done all three. However, I usually choose Squirtle now, because it has more base defense (correct me if I'm wrong, it was either def or sp. def) and has a defensive advantage.However, Bulbasaur is more stronger against the first two gyms in terms of super effective-ness.Charmander sucked at the beginning, I remember one time I couldn't even get past Misty :/

Squirtle... I like turtles! I think Charmander and his evolutions were the best though.

I went with Squirtle, right off the bat.I bought the game, started it, named my character and once I had the chance I went with Squirtle.Ever since I always took the water Pokémon at the start of Gold/Silver/Crystal and Saph/Ruby/Emerald.

Am I only one choosing Bulbasaur? I love grass/bugs pokemon types. Well, it's hard to start with grass pokemon - but leter he pwns with Solar Beam.

Charmander is a definite yes.He's got great stats, and Fire is IMHO more useful than grass, and maybe water.Plus, Charizard rocks.Out loud.

I usually choose water pokemon because it is very useful ing gym battles andyour rival will choose a grass pokemon and you can just walk into the grass and catch a flying pokemon.

Wow, almost no one chose Bulbasaur!!! I chose Squirtle in all my early games, and in the remakes I chose Charmander. Never Bulbasaur for some reason!

Squirtle.Being the water-loving crazy that I am, and because he was so cute and awesome (plus Wartortle kicked total butt) he was the ultimate choice.

always bulbasaur, but i would never let it evolve in to venusaur- too hefty for me- i preferred the awkward teenage stage of the starting three pokemon.

I chose charmander because i was in love with charizard since i first saw him on the series i and he turned out to be the best of the 3 in my opinion

I chose Bulbasaur because Bulbasaur is a Grass/Poison so Bulbasaur has an advantage at the 2 gyms because that's Rock and Water type...

I like the little plant-dino. First gen. is the only generation I don't use the Water starter. Bulk + Sleep Powder wins.

I had both red and blue growing up so I used to always use one to trade the other 2 starters to the file I was going to play. But if I was only given one choice I'd have to say squirtle. Charmander was my favourite pokemon growing up (well Charmander and his evolutions anways) but the first gym was always such a bitch to beat that squirtle was the best choice.
