Bosses don't really mean much to me. They're just more complex enemies that take a little bit more thinking than normal to beat. Final bosses, however, do mean something, because they bring the entire thing to one final showdown and I like that kind of thing.

Some games bosses were just nothing (Kirby Games), but then there were some bosses that were almost epic (Gears of War).

I definitely think they still have a place in gaming; well-designed bosses will remain in your memories forever and are often highlights of games. Unfortunately, the emphasis on them has disappeared in many games. Resident Evil 4 was the last game for me that had truly great bosses (hopefully Metroid Prime 3/Mario Galaxy change this (when it comes out in Europe in the case of the former)).

Yes, my whole gaming experience is centered around the boss phenomenon. Who are you going to fight at the end of the level? The Worker? no.... The Boss for sure.

Some games do very well with their villans....others don't..-cough cough-(Halo series). I think the bad guys need to be built up. Not random monsters that fall into your little green elfish hero's lap. Final Fantasy have always done great with that. Scratch that. Square has always made their bosses very well.

They matter, they matter so much that I can't wait to kill them. Unfortunatly most of the bosses until the last boss (at least in Fire Emblem games) are a joke compared to it. I think it would matter to people more if they gave you something really special for each you killed.
