In doing a lot of research lately on the PS1, I've decided to create this thread to answer questions you may have about PlayStation hardware. Note that this does NOT cover emulating games (such as with ePSXe). For that, check out the Emulation forum.Q: What are the differences between the PS1 and the PSOne?A: PS1 is the commonly used designation of the original model of the PlayStation. PSOne refers to the newer model. Besides the obvious difference in design, the major difference between the two is the removal of the link port in the back, which was used to connect multiple Playstations for certain multiplayer games. It was also changed internally to make old modchips obsolete. But the primary function of the system is the same.Q: Do DualShock 2 controllers work in a PS1?A: Yes. The only difference between the DualShock and the DualShock 2 is that the DS2 has button sensitivity that is used in some PS2 games. DualShock controllers also work in a PS2 just fine.Q: What brand of memcards are the best to have?A: Sony's official cards are generally the best. Often times, 3rd party cards will have issues with keeping saves, especially with Squaresoft games. But for most any other games, 3rd party is alright.Q: Is there a way to backup the saves of my memcard onto a PC?A: Yes, by using a device known as DexDrive. You need a serial port on your computer to make it work. Unfortunately, the device is no longer made, so you'll have to look at eBay to find one.Q: Where can I download saves to put on my memcard?A: GameFAQs.com often has them.Q: My PlayStation can't read my memcard/controller, but they work on another system.A: If you have the PS1, the controller/memcard component can be replaced. You'll have to find another PS1 to swipe it off of, and open the system up, but the component is easy to replace. (PSOne status is unknown at the time of writing.)Q: What is the PocketStation?A: This was an addon component to the PS that allowed game makers to add extras to the system. It also had games developed just for it. However, this was only released in Japan. Not a lot of games used this feature, but a list can be found here. This is also not made anymore, so you'll have to look on eBay to find one.Q: Can I play backups/imports on my system?A: Normally, no. However, it can be done by using a couple different methods:1 - Modchip. This requires you to solder a chip inside your PS1/PSOne. Once you've done that, you can directly boot normal games, as well as backups and imports. There are differences when installing a chip depending on your version - know what you have before you buy.2 - Breaker Pro. This is great for people who don't want to open up their PS1/PSOne or are unable to solder. This disc is booted first in your system, then when instructed you can swap and boot your import or backup disc.Q: I've heard of a technique for playing backups/imports called the swap technique.A. Yes, there is a technique that can work, but more often then not, it either fails, or plays the game very badly. It's also difficult to perform. The above methods I listed are much simpler and much more reliable.Q. What's the best way to burn discs to play on my system?A: The best program to use is Alcohol 120%, using the Playstation setting. Also, it's strongly recommended that if you can turn the burning speed to a slower setting (the closer to 1x, the better), do so. You'll get a better burn and your system will read it better.Q. Can I play emulators on my system?A: Some. The first place to go look for emulators is Zophar's Domain. Since the PlayStation isn't a powerful system, don't expect to do too much with it.Q. My question didn't get answered/I have an addition.A: Then feel free to ask. PM Sir VG to get it taken care of.Hope this helps out!
