I'd say Genesis was the better system in the beginning, then around 1994 the SNES started getting enough of a base of support to topple it. That's just as far as games though, and that only happened because developers chose to support the consoles at different rates. As far as the actual machine went, the Genesis was superior in most things (processor speed especially) but the low number of colours you could easily put onscreen and the lack of specialized hardware that let the SNES go 3d and hold enough prerendered data to do KI and DKC hurt it, over time. Both systems were great, but there were games on each that could never have been done as well on the other system.

two words chrono trigger with a game that great the poor old genesis didn't even stand a chance. :( also on top of that it's other games in general beat the living tar out of the genesis.

I agree with most of you; the SNES is definitely better. I never did have a Genesis, but I never really wanted one; there were a lot of great games for the SNES. While Genesis did have some real gems (Langrisser, Sonic, etc.), the sheer volume of good games from the SNES really beat it out.

I'd have to disagree with the majority of you. My favourite series is the Shining Force series, strategy/RPG with great graphics for the time. Really addictive with great replay value, and that was Sega territory. The SNES had Mario and Final Fantasy, which is very hard for me to argue against because I love both of them, but my fondest memories are of the Sega.

This really isn't that close. The Genesis didn't have CLOSE the wide variety of games that the SNES had. Action, sports, RPGs, adventure...the SNES had a wide variety of almost every genre of game and had many of the greatest games ever made created for it at that time. The Genesis really couldn't keep up. The SNES is the greatest console ever...hands down.Stevo

snes was more for the older kids cuz it had all the good rpgs.. if you like just plain old action games like streets of rage or mortal kombat, or even double dragon, sega was better

I owned a Mega Drive in those days, but I couldn't resist playing some of the great games on the SNES.In my opinion, Sega's system had better platformers (Sonic's pace, stage design and music were more creative than Mario in my opinion) and beat-'m-ups (Streets of Rage > 3rd party Final Fight), but at the same time, the SNES was undeniably the king of RPGs and had a much higher volume of games. So yeah, I stuck with my Mega Drive and didn't buy a SNES myself but played many of its RPGs. Kind of like what happened in the generation after that when I bought a Saturn and didn't buy a PS until the Saturn games died out. I still enjoyed lots of the PS RPGs my cousins had, and they'd come over for Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes and Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn.

There is no doubt that SNES was the superior system in terms of Graphics, sound and ... .Considering Genesis was released in 1989 and SNES in 1991 this shouldn't be a surprise. But, in my idea in the 16-bit era Genesis was also a mature system and you could have nearly the same deal of fun on both systems when playing ports of one game.Considering the RPGs, though Genesis had a handful of really great titles they were nothing compared to what SNES offered. So, RPG fans shouldn't hesitate moving to SNES. But in terms of platformers and action games I have seen slightly better collection of games on Genesis than SNES.

old school nintendo systems were unrivaled. Sure Genesis was actually a great system, as was dreamcast. But Sonci was the only good game. Nintendo had a unlimited number of characters to make games at their disposal. They didn't have to depend on Mario every single time.

I would have to say sega for snes may have had more quality games but the games that were good on sega were alot better than snes such as shining force for one or castlevania bloodlines and spawn for sega was the best spawn game ever

I'd say Genesis, its the one I actually own/ed and still play. I've always been a Sega fans, so I'm I have to admit, I'm biased. I can't defend the 32x in the same way, it was made with good intentions, a cheap alternative for a 32 bit console, but in the end, it wasn't supported well at all.

I have both of them, I personally like both of them the same. I mean they both had big named characters, that were in a feud. Mario Vs Sonic. The Mario games were good on the SNES, and the Sonic games were good on the Sega Genesis.
