I've always had a problem with penalizing students for not paying attention. If they fail it's their own problem. As long as they're not being disruptive to others.Then again, maybe that's more of a college philosophy since there you don't have parents screaming at you when they're children are failing and various government programs encouraging doing well on standardized tests.When I was substitute teaching a while back, I took a DS from a kid playing in class because he was being rather obnoxious about it. (I think it was second grade, I don't remember). But then I started thinking about my own DS and how pricey they are, and secretly gave it back to him at the end of the class with the promise of never bringing it back. And he kept that promise too. If we confiscated any electronic device from the students, it wasn't supposed to be returned to them until the end of the semester/year.
