Downloading music is either legal or illegal. Some websites let you download music for free as long as you don't distribute them. Unlike file-sharing programs and websites, however, they share a different impact. You have to pay in order to do that except for the ones that bypass to go for free. Even movies, games and software programs are even illegal to download. The biggest question for now is: Is downloading special or software e-books illegal or not?

i think it should be legal to an extent. records shouldn't be as expensive as they are now... i see no reason for it. the people who actually deserve the money are the artists and the producers, not the silly corporate people. records could still go out without them. i've seen some responses here about "hey just the artists deserve the respect and money." but seriously, there is so much more to an album than just the artist. where would said artist be without the person that records them and actually knows how to do such?but that's not the point.stupid record labels are just as i said, stupid.so how does this relate to downloading music being legal or illegal... i don't really know. all i know is that it's overpriced.what would be best is to be able to download songs for free to see if you would like an artist, and if you like them then go out and by the cd. but of course, this brings into question the morality of man. would someone actually go out and buy something they already have for free? firstly, it is inconvenient to your wallet. secondly, why waste a trip to fye or virgin or wherever? so this solution is obsolete.it's a terrible problem, and i don't think it can be solved simply by... it should be legal! it should be illegal!that'll get us nowhere.

It depends on the music. If it's content is good then it's legal and if not it's illegal.

but that is so subjective. one man's trash is another man's treasure.and no one man can be the judge of everything. then i'd never get what i want.

It should be legal. Seeing as though they do make most of there money going on tour anyways, and they already are millionairs, so whats one less big screen plasma HD dimond encrusted TV worth to them anyways?

I would say yes and no. If you download free music, without paying them, it is consider illegal. But when you buy for it, and you download it, its not illegal. So my answer is Yes & No.

I think it's only half right. If you only like one song in a particular CD, couldn't possibly you purchased the CD? In a certain country(*forgot the name*) They allow the purchased of a song at not sure how much ( but i know it's cheap ). Why dont you just download it for free then? It's only a song, and wouldn't hurt the music company much. Furthermore, if you like the song, you may purchase the album. Ok kind of contradicting myself but nevertheless, I would choose the no options. There are no ways to fully prohibits the downloading of music :(

Uh, technically there is no debate in this matter. Downloading music off the internet without paying for it is illegal. When you download the music without paying for it you are stealing money from the artist and everyone else whom is producing that music. The downloading the song first to see if you want it is a load of ****! If you wanted to listen to it first I'm sure that you will be able to stream it off a website somewhere. For those of you whom say that said screw capitalism (which may have only been one person, I didn't feel like readiing this whole thread), come on! Capitalism is the basis of this country (If your from the USA) and there is no question that it works. Does it have its flaws? Yes, at times but seriously what social system doesn't have its flaws? It will not kill a person to spend 99 cents on a song or 10 for a cd. Plus, it always pisses me off when I go to a friends house with my newest tunes and they're like "Oh, I just downloaded that online." I don't know, but I usually get a sense of pride when ever I buy something with my own money. Why? Because I worked for it and I worked to get that music. Well, thanks for listening! Or is it reading?

No because it's completely ridiculous how much money they make and we barely affect them. I remember a south park episode where this kid of a singer had to wait an extra month for his private island because we downloaded music.

Should downloading music be illegal? Honestly, I shouldn't be answering this because the way I feel is hypocritical. I do feel that downloading music the way we do it now, where no one gets anything in return for the music, is wholly illegal and even slightly immoral. I console myself to my opinions by stating it thus: I consider what I do to be essentially borrowing the item from a library. For instance, I recently borrowed a copy of "The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions with Seu Jorge" from a library. I have ripped that music onto my PC, and thusly I have the data forever. Yet I have harmed no one, as the library purchased the music and I would have had the ability to borrow it anyway. And, had I not returned the item, while the fees would be stiff if I ever wanted to use the library again, I would have had it anyway. Instead, I have the music and returned it sooner than the due date, thus allowing for higher circulation and more people enjoying the data. And it's the same with my downloading. I download from either LimeWire or BitTorrent, both of which are P2P services. When I finish downloading something on BitTorrent, I've been taught to seed the file. On LimeWire, I download to my shared folder directly. I don't share partial files, but that's a preference. One person pays for the item, the rest of us borrow it from him by making our own copy and giving us a community-based situation. But I do feel that somewhere along the line, some organization, like a library, should give some money to those who are producing media. But then again, my idea provides for a worldwide system wherein only one copy of an item would be sold. There would be no gold records, no top sales lists, nothing of the sort. And that would mean that anyone who wanted to make music would have to produce both quality and quantity. Movies would be the same way. Essentially, we would be shifting the way we understand media, and the world would change its order.
