Different versions of Vista and different Bit versions ultilise different amounts of RAM.On 256mb, that is low! Windows struggles to run on that. I would recommend RAM overa new CPU. You can get 2gb ddr2 800MHz for around £45.regarding the maximum RAM for windows, vista Service Pack 1 now recognizes the full 4GB if you got them installed.
Faster CPU or more memory

RAM is really useful for multitasking, so that would be a worthwhile upgrade.

i think that you first upgrade your ram (1 G or above) , then if you can buy a new processor, buy at least a intel core 2 duo 2 GHz (or an AMD equivalent)

Ok firstly, i don't know what people are trying to say on this topic. Gaming comes down to two main things;-Processor -Video Memory. You only need enough RAM to handle the minimum requirements of a game, otherwise it plays more of a role in multitasking. (however if you decide to upgrade to vista you will need more RAM to handle the shell)1.6ghz won't be able to run most of the high end (even middle range) games of today. (I'm guessing you have the single core version). Also you can't use an intel processor because your motherboard won't support it. in terms of processors, i would go for an AMD Athlon 2.4ghz X2 5600. (or something lower) Also you will need a graphics card to play games smoothly, you haven't listed what card your motherboard could support, or what card you currently have. Also whats the budget?

I like to know if you have AGP8X slotIf you use the platform for playing HD Content,it is enough to do so,Just Buy more memory to do so.If you don't have that slot,or you like to play PC games, you need to buy a new set.
