Lol, this is the most recent question still. Anyway, the answer is water, which can take the form of solid (ice), liquid (liquid water), or gas (water vapor). It is obviously critical for life as was mentioned in the riddle.

Is it just atoms of whatever element than? They still make you up and can still take the 3 states of liquid, water, and gas.

I'm going to guess it's either dinosaurs or neanderthals, as dinosaurs are used when making examples of what the earth was like hundreds of millions of years ago, and neanderthals were ancient humans.

Humans are primates. Primates are prosimians (like lemurs) and simians (like monkeys and apes, also includes humans). Did you mean cave men?Anyways, my guess is ancestors. Going out on a limb here and saying volcano, because when it explodes it makes a huge boom, its lighting would be any debris that was sitting on top of/in the crater, its rain would be ash, and you would never WANT to stand close to a volcano unless you're studying one.

i know this may sound a little weird but for me the answer is "sound"because a resonating sound goes quietly but louder when nearing to the source of interpreting that side (example: our ears..)

i think it is echo too,because when in a large,cave for example, the echo you hear when you make a sound are as loud.my second guess is Thunder.. because "surrounded by pillows. They smother me" .people who are afraid of thunder will usually cover ears/head with their pillow or blanket, to silence the loud sound of the thunder.
