I think you mean bulwark. Has same meaning as shield so mostly it, I hope.

I was going to say gumsheild but upon googling it some places have it down as one word which would make it a compound word, others have it as 2 words which would blow my answer out of the water. Anyone shed any light on whether it's one word or 2?

i'm guessing you mean kite shield it's not a compound word and i don't believe it should be written as kiteshield, but i think kite shield fits the bill pretty closely
does it trouble your mind, the way you trouble mine?

I'm guessing a feather. It is light, as in not heavy, and it also doesn't shine by itself because it is not a light source.

It's kind of weird answer but I would say Ozone. Just had a biology class about it, to which I heard that even the slightest amount is lethal. But you can't live without it either, or you would pretty much die from UV-radiation.
