The biggest factor to why blue ray will replace dvd is because it has a hold in the market. Remember when DVD came out and there was DVD-R, DVD+R DVD-RW and other formats. On top of the fact even within the categories there were multiple formats. What happened with blue ray is all the large companies said this is the defacto format for the new age. HD-DVD is not a competitor because it competes with the formats as of now. Whilst Blue-Ray is the future and all major companies have to use it and not deter from its format.

If you've been keeping up with MGS4 rumours you would know... :shifty:Rumors about a 90 minute cutscene. AWESOME

Haha, yes, I just recently heard about the insane amount of cutscenes. All you PS3 owners can have fun paying $60 for a movie! It does seem that at the moment, the best deal for a Blu- Ray player is to just buy a PS3. It's only a little more expensive than most Blu- Ray players. Just like how I don't even own a dedicated DVD player, I just use my PS2 and PC because when I was in the market for a DVD player, DVD players weren't much less than PS2s.

there is no question about it. the blueray surely will replace the dvd just as the dvd replaced the vcd and so on. and it will also be replaced, if all necessary parameters in this matter are kept constant.

Not for a while, currently Blu-ray is only for the trend setters.Go into an electronics store and take a look around, notice how much variety of DVDs there are, and next, look at the price of them. Now take a look at how many DVD burners there are, most of them start at around $35 and can write at about X52.Now look at Blu-ray, how many blank Blu-ray disks you find, and next, look at the price of a Blu-ray burner. I have not looked too hard but from what I have seen, they are around the $400 mark and I only seen them write up to X4. Also, take a look at how many electronic devices use DVD compared to Blu-ray.I sincerely doubt Blu-ray will take over, but I do think that in the next 3 years, we will move away from using the red laser and switch to the blue laser because the concept is a good idea, but as usual, Sony is getting ahead of themselves.

I really doubt that blu-ray will replace DVD. What I believe will happen is that they will both be replaced by a newer, more efficient technology. The problem with blu ray is that they are really expensive, barely compatible with anything, and their reproducers aren't cheap either; that's why I think it will end up like zip-discs: not being able to replace the older technology in time before a new one appears.

I think that DVDs sell more than Blu-Rays. If this is the case, I cannot see the DVDs being replaced any time soon.

Well, eventually, yes it would. Perhaps 5 or 10 years from now, Blu-rays will obviously beat DVD once they get more readily available as DVDs are today (and slowly, cheaper).

Nah. It's like people thought the Sega Dreamcast was gonna beat out Nintendo. It came out as a competitor that died over time, just like blue ray will.

Yeah, but you know, we can't live with 8.5 Gig DVD9s forever. Blu Ray can only die if there's something to pwn it. If something of that much space comes out, only then Blu-Ray will lose.

I think Blu-Ray will replace DVD in say 2015. Players are still incredibly expensive (~400) as well as discs (~30) DVD did replace VHS though!

IF PlayStation 3 dropped their price like XBox everyone would be watching Blu Ray already.

I don't think so because my friend is a technical entertainment systems installer and he says they have too much technical trouble using Blue Ray stuff over the normal DVDs and they are more expensive.

I think that blue-ray won't wipe out the DVD's, but it will probably match it in profit.

I highly doubt Blu-Ray will ever replace DVDs. BluRay players are very pricey, and who needs HD video when one has a gigantic HDTV that can instantly transform any crappy old movie from the 50s to a cinema classic? Also, DVDs are easier to get, and there's a much larger selection of DVD movies than BluRay movies.

A decade back, the same could be said about DVDs when comparing between CDs and DVDs, and a decade from now, the same will be said when comparing between Blu-Ray and its next generation. Blu-Ray is still (more or less) a newbie, obviously it's pricey now, but over the next few years, it will surely become more readily available and cheaper, and then Blu-Ray would become more popular just like DVD pwned CD over time as it became cheaper and easy to avail.

Blu ray's prices have been dropping dramatically, especially in the burner front. for data archival purposes the capacity is amazing! (assuming they come with that hard coat protection) and for movies, studios will try to push blu ray hard as they are more profitable at the moment. Blu ray is steadily capturing market share at the moment, so it's not like it has become stagnant.

I've heard that some rich school nearby was replacing its old VCR's with DVD players, and now with Blu-Ray.I'm pretty sure it will replace it, among the rich that is.
