I would have to say Final Fantasy II for NES. That game is rediculously hard from the start. I never actually beat it or got very far. The hardest rpg that Ive beaten would be Breath of Fire for SNES. That game is also extremely hard...but beatable. What do ya'll think? I wanna play a challanging rpg...

I think Diablo II is the hardest rpg if you solo all the way to hell the enemy creatures kills you in a few hit, on second place it would probably be 7th Saga it was hard at first but i got overpowered in the end of the game.

Try Secret of Mana for SNES. It's a long game, but fun and challenging. but be careful when you save your game if using an emulator, you might get stuck on a hard boss battle which you can't beat. Also i like the way Lufia is a really good RPG, but at the same time gives clever puzzles to figure out.

I've not played FFII on NES but I have played FFI. It was quite difficult both because it has no clear linear progression of plot, and no MP system. It's also really hard to keep your higher level spells filled up. >=(

No offense guys but almost none of those RPGs listed could really be considered hard. Maybe a little challenging in parts but if you build a decent party, none of those are that hard. The hardest RPG I ever played is definitely 7th Saga. This game just kicks your behind from start to finish. Every boss is a major challenge and it seems like a miracle when you beat them (even at the beginning) and it's often hard to even GET the boss in some sort of decent condition. It required lots of level grinding just to give yourself a chance. I beat it, but I wouldn't want to play it again.A nominee for the hardest RPG BOSS ever would be the final boss of Lunar Silver Star Story Complete...this guy takes you to the limit for the entire battle. And even if you win, the game gives you a cheap instant death if you don't play a certain song on your flute afterward which means you'd have to fight him again. Ouch.Stevo

...That's almost exactly what I was planning on saying while I was reading the rest of the posts in this topic. The Seventh Saga is also very entertaining because instead of the game just throwing random encounters at you, it gives you a chance to avoid them by moving around the enemies. Also, you might want to try beating Final Fantasy Legend with one monster character. It isn't actually possible unless you use an incredibly cheap, broken special attack on the final boss. I won't go into detail, though, because elaborating would spoil the game's plot.

^Oh, I forgot FFLegends. That is definitely a challenge. One of my worst experiences ever was with that game. I started rushing through the game at the end wasn't properly leveling up my characters especially since I didn't want my weapons to break from the endless battles (and couldn't afford to refine them) so I rushed through and got to the final boss room then saved my game. So needless to say I got my butt whipped and because I had saved the game, I had no way of leaving the final boss's room and there were no more encounters I could use to level up. I had to start the whole thing over. Ugggg...Stevo

Are you serious? FF2? this is the reason im buying a DS I loved this game and it was FAR from hard... had an awesome story and alla that. but Hard.. maybe the "hard type" that Japan had but even that isnt tough to beat... I was attempting a Solo go at the game with Just Cecil.. but it didnt work out I got to the Evil Wall and had to cheat a little to get past him and then got stuck (where I am now) at the 4 Elements in the tower, its just to tough to do solo.. but with a whole team forget it to easy... ^_^ just my 2centsEDIT:: LMAO... FFII for nes... WHoops... well that changes everything... yeah I'll agree it was hard sorry about the above nonsence

The most challenging RPG I've ever played was Bahamut Dragoon for SNES. There was just so much to keep track of, not only your characters, but there Dragons as well. I'm not very fond of tactics games, and its sort of a tactics/turn based mixed game.

yeah, i agree. I find that RPG's in general just become less fun when you're made to look after 50 different characters.

Yeah, Ive played that one...I absolutely HATED the fighting style on itEDIT: OK Ive started playing Bahmut Dragoon again, now I love it...so farI also gave 7th Saga a try, yeah that game is so hard its not even funny. At least when you die you dont get a "game over", which is nice

Indalecio, a RPG made by a class in university, never released to anyone, and way too difficult.
