I've not played FFII on NES but I have played FFI. It was quite difficult both because it has no clear linear progression of plot, and no MP system. It's also really hard to keep your higher level spells filled up.

Who needs spells, when you have Swords? I completed the game with a solo Fighter/Knight, Chaos was much easier than the Marsh Cave :D I hate paralyze

Fire Emblem Tharcia 776, on Hard mode, going for a ranked run. This is nigh-impossible.

I agree, I found the first Breath of Fire game really hard but once I played it a bit it slowly got easier.

Seriously, Breath of Fire?!? I wouldnt say it's the hardest Rpg ever compared to Breath if Fire : Dragon's Quarter. You never know when you are going to get into a boss battle and restarting the game is stupid.

Lagoon for the Super Nintendo or Final Fantasy 2 for the original NES. Both those games kicked my butt and I never beat either of them.

I think The Bard's Tale on NES is pretty hard.It was the only first person I got into.It takes a long time to level up,but at least there is a pretty good money trick right from the begining, which is similar to another money trick in Dragon Warrior 3.I've never beat it.Lufia 2 got pretty hard towards the end, still never beat it.But in my opinion the hardest RPG ever would have to be Phantasy Star 2. Although the first one was also extremely difficult,2 is just insane.I've beat 1,3,4,but the second haunts me to this day.

The older, and usually the harder. Unless a recent developer has specifically decided to make a hard, or non-linear, rpg. Comparing pieces of cake like Fable 2 or every FF from VII on to unbelievably taxing rpgs like Phantasy Star, Ultima III or, heck, any roguelike rpg... is mayhem. Yeah, probably the hardest/most confusing RPG I've played was Ultima V. Too confusing, furious mapping and unforgiving monsters. Unlike Ultima VI, that was way more pleasant. Still heaps of mapping (pencil and paper) though.I've still got a notebook full of Ultima maps, back from the olden days. Now it would be unthinkable.

The hardest RPG for me was Seventh Saga. I found it not only challenging but frustrating, and sad to say I never did finish the game.

Tough question. 7th Saga was pretty hard, but not terribly so.I guess I'd say Lagoon. That game was crazy hard.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne for the PS2, Battle Toads (the entire series), and the next-gen Ninja Gaidens.SMT Nocturne was easily the hardest RPG I've ever played, as some bosses will seem frustratingly impossible if their weaknesses aren't exploited and it's the only RPG I've ever played where it's entirely possible to die with the first random encounter! To this day, I have never defeated the final boss.Battle Toads is impossibly challenging as far as the whole series goes! What starts as an innocent TMNT ripoff of a beat'em up quickly turns into fast obstacle course gameplay that tests 100% of your hand-eye coordination in some of the most grueling challenges I've ever seen. If it weren't for the game's resident sex symbol, the Dark Queen, I'm pretty sure no player would torture themselves to reach the very end.Lastly, the Ninja Gaiden series. I haven't played the original NES versions, but the Xbox ones were harder than holy hell when it came to impeccable timing and fast, furious attacks to take down legions of incredibly smart badguys. This was one of those "Pat Yourselves on the Back" if you beat it, because "It doesn't get much harder than this". (Not to sound boisterous, but that was quoted from my own detailed review on another site, and hey, it works)

Really? Final Fantasy II for NES? I always thought getting through the last dungeons of Final Fantasy III for NES was harder, at least if you don't use save states. You have like 3 different long areas to go through where you can't save or rest, and you have to beat a pretty tough boss after you get through them.Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord and Wizardry II: Knight of Diamonds for NES are also pretty tough. You pretty much have to draw out a map on graph paper if you are going to try and get through them. If you don't use a walkthrough with someone else's maps, you will probably lose your whole party of characters many times after all the fighting you have spent time on for leveling up; this is thanks to the pits in the ground once you reach the third basement.I hear from many people that Dragon Warrior II for NES is hard without a walkthrough, but using a walkthrough I am finding it pretty easy.
