I would say Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu, without a somewhat thought out strategy, is difficult. Especially your first play through without a walkthrough. As if dealing with one army isn't enough, usually there's 3 or 4, in some chapters, 5 castles to seize. Each castle has their own army with them to defend and there's...What? 8-15 enemies per small army? Sometimes you have more than one coming after you at once, causing you to say to yourself "Hm...Now, how should I go about killing these guys?"

For me it was Shin Megami Tensei for SNES. (both of them). I've got to like a half, then got lost in dungeons and got my behind handed to me by some monsters dwelling there. Creepy.

Hm, well the hardest RPG I've ever played would be Terranigma. It's the only one where I had to cheat. Although, this isn't really hardness as in skill but due to levelling. When you get to the Bloody Mary boss, you're so under-levelled, you need to spend ages levelling in order to be of a match against her. That was just plain mean.

Repeatedly eating Star Fox characters since: 1998.

Golden Sun was pretty hard. I always got lost and hated the puzzles areas.

Well the hardest one i've played recently would be demon souls, and well i wouldn't call that hard so much as annoying and cheap especailly un dodgeable traps that kill you i mean WTF is the point of that. However there is a particular rpg back on the PS1 that i remember that even with multiple rentals i never got past halfway. Tried playing it again a year or so ago and it totally destroyed me after the starting area and i wondered how on earth i did at when i was like 12
. IT was called Vandal heart 2 i believe, could have been the first one too not 100% sure.

hmm... probably final fantasy 1 and 2. those early rpg's were difficult in the sense that you had to grind a lot in order to level up enough to take out the bosses
