The thing in this topic is if you like or dislike if the hero talk or doesnt talk in the game. There are games like crhono cross, alundra, alundra2, where the hero doesnt talk? I dont.It like you are a ghost or you cannot talk by some kind of magic or somethingAnd there doesnt appear any part where at least he is talking with someone even in the endings. I like to have a hero with his own life. for ex. Final fantasy 8He talk about his life, and he has his own opinion because a hero has a stong paper in the game and he need to talk to express wath he feel.

Like Jak and Daxter on the PS2. Jak doesnt talk at all. Daxter does all the talking.I dont mind it if someone is doing the talking for them. Otherwise, its just to strange for me.

I don't really mind that much, like in Suikoden. The main hero didn't talk and he still has a cool story involving around him, all you had to do is choose what you wanted to say.

Its okay but talking adds alot and choosing what to say also adds alot more character control and I like that.

I think it's really annoying when your character can only say what the options allow him to say. Sometimes the options are really stupid. Also if the character talks it gives him a personality. As long as he talks at least a little bit it's all good.

Not talking is ok for some games, like Shining Force, or Shining in the Darkness... Yeah, you noticed I like the 'Shining' games?

I don't like in GTA3 that the guy barely talks. I'm not sure if he talks at all because I'm only up to staunton Island.

I don't mind if the main character doesn't talk. A lot of the games I play the hero doesn't talk.

Yea i know what you mean. Super Mario RPG, Mario doesn't talk, he just does body language which is okay by me. I mean, I can't imagine what he would say if he could talk, but I am perfectly fine with his body language, cause sometimes its kind of funny.

yeah the body language done by mario in SMRPG was really funnyespecially when he did that lil' flappy jaw thing that Smitty did...i think Fido (the guy from GTA3) was just a mute. Maybe he couldn't talk...poor guy... always being sent on missions without being able to say "Hey, don't you think this is kinda dangerous?"all in all, i would rather that some games have the main character talkbut i really can't complain...peace

Well that wasn't the case for me, I felt that Squall could of had a stronger personality. The loner bit didn't really work out for a main character who surrounds himself with friends  . I love FF8's gameplay and plot, but I like FF9's characters way more because they all had their own stories and individual dilenmas that helped contribute to the plot.

Whats wrong with the characters not talking? When games started out the characters never spoke at all? Characters talking is only a rencet invention of modern video games. Some of the best games out there dont have any voice acting for there main characters look at the legend of zelda for example it's the best game EVER, link never spoke that one word EVER just a few shouts and screams. When you have characters talking it kinda messes up your own internal voice for the characters sometimes. So silent characters is not a bad thing.

Silent characters are not necessarily a bad thing, but if given the proper voices it can raise the characters (and the game) to new heights.Case in point: in Half Life, you never hear Gordon Freeman talking. Everyone else talks to you, but you never talk. It works out fine, though, and the game is great. However, if you compare it to, say, Halo (and I won't venture to say which is better - they're both excellent games), just the simple one-liners of Master Chief gives him a whole different character that wouldn't exist without the voice.Bottom line - games can work fine without main-character voices, but if they have good ones, it's a big help.

characters not talking is fine by me, i mean in the old days.. mario 1, zelda, etc, games were judges by purely how fun they were to play, not by stupid overated graphics and cut scenes, they were graded on play-ability. i mean im all for amazing graphics, but now it seems liek thats all that matters, i'd take a game with a good storyline over a game that looks real

I hate it when characters dont talk...like BOMEz said, link never speaks a word...but the other characters can read his freaking mind...Would you like this sword link? i bet you would!...or "Hey link i just found this shiny ocarana...whats that? you want it? all you have to do is ask silly!" it just gets annoying when characters do that.

I've always noticed that in a lot of games, the main characters don't talk. But I never really cared about it. There's nothing wrong with it.

It all depends on the character and what is being said. Take Auron from FFX for example. He barely talks throughout the game, yet still he is very popular. Sometimes, silence can make the characters more mysterious, making them better.

Old games hardly had sounds. There was this old game "Commander Keen" he never said a word in the whole game, but it was one of the greatest old games. Then "Crusader No Regret" only gunblasts, no talking, this was another great game. Talking helps to get a more complex story line, but its not neccesary.

Wow, I never thought i'd find anyone today who remembers the commander keen series  That kid had one gangsta pogo stick!Now-a-days the 'no-social skills hero' is used when the writer is ambiguous on the personality of the main character or wishes to focus on other parts of the game.Though both options can make a game shine under the right circumstances, personally I prefer chatty main characters. I like to know who i'm playing the role of in a game.
