Dude, I was a fan of Commander Keen too!Wow, I never thought i'd find anyone today who remembers the commander keen seriesOld games hardly had sounds. There was this old game "Commander Keen" he never said a word in the whole game, but it was one of the greatest old games. Then "Crusader No Regret" only gunblasts, no talking, this was another great game. Talking helps to get a more complex story line, but its not neccesary.
That kid had one gangsta pogo stick!Now-a-days the 'no-social skills hero' is used when the writer is ambiguous on the personality of the main character or wishes to focus on other parts of the game.Though both options can make a game shine under the right circumstances, personally I prefer chatty main characters. I like to know who i'm playing the role of in a game.
games where the Principal character doesnt talk

The difference between Auron not being talkative and the main character being a silent protagonist is huge.I think the idea behind the silent protagonist is that if the character doesn't voice any opinions of his own you can theoretically get into his shoes better. I like the fact that there are games that go both ways. And one of the many things I like about the Jak games (the first of which is Jak & Daxter) is that Jak CAN talk -- in fact, there is at least one point where he opens his mouth to say something and Daxter interrupts him. In Jak II and III, he talks quite a bit, which reflects very much on the changes the character goes through over the course of the three-act story. It all depends on the character and what is being said. Take Auron from FFX for example. He barely talks throughout the game, yet still he is very popular. Sometimes, silence can make the characters more mysterious, making them better.

"A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path, he will then have to choose. The boy doesn't always know. At some point, the boy then becomes an adult, and learns what he was able to become. Joy and sadness forever will accompany this. He is confronted with a choice. When this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy. The boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said. A boy has the right to dream. For those endless possibilities are stretched out before him. We must remember. All men were once boys."

Again, Legend of Zelda. Thread still over, Silent protaganists win again.Link shows tons of emotion, and his body language conveys a lot in the 3D games.I don't like it when the main character is too silent. Grunts of pain, relief, anything to show emotion would be okay.
