I say there are certain types of games where it fits. I can't see mario talking, ever. I suppose I can see Link speaking, but if they left him mute I wouldn't care either.

I really don't mind if the main hero talks or not as long as the game has a good storyline

In Golden Sun, Isaac doesn't talk. It's still an amazing game.

None of The Elder Scrolls games (while there are choices you can make) feature the main character speaking and I enjoy them all. This allows you to indentify more with your character and makes it easier to roleplay.

I dunno, sometimes it's good, if you can't find a good voice actor or just can't really figure out what kind of personality your character should have. But for the most part, I think the main character should talk, seeing as how he/she is the main point of the game.

Many times, I find main characters that don't speak to be mildly humorous. You can do a lot with gestures and body language to make conversations with other characters in the game much more interesting than if you gave the character an active part in the dialogue. In many games, the creators make a point of making jokes referencing the fact that their hero never speaks. I do believe that there are many times when a speaking hero adds a lot to the story, such as in most of the final fantasy games. When something bad happens to a hero who's personality you understand, there's much more of a possibility that you'll feel bad about it, unless of course you don't like the hero.

It doesn't bother me, I actually prefer it because it means less reading in my part. In such as The Legend of Zelda or Golden Sun, I don't mind if the main character talk or doesn't talk.

It's ok if the main guy doesn't talk, at least for me. He doesn't really have to to get his background story, but it definitely helps if he does.
