It depends, on the type of game. Something like Pokémon, the story isn't about what you say or think, it's about what you do with your pokes. And the stories don't matter much anyway. Things like GTA 3... Well it didn't really feel all that wierd until after i played Vice City. I mean, Tommy Vercetti had quite a strong and pronounced personality... Going back to a guy who only makes sounds when he's shot... Was really really wierd... I mean, it was like he was just a robot with no independant thinking. Even stranger is the fact that the story is one of revenge (as are nearly ALL GTA stories), and the guy actually killed his traitor girlfriend, all of that without speaking!

I like it circumstantially. It aids in differentiating story based/RPG games from purely action/platformer/etc. games. In a game such as Mario, where story is but a miniscule piece, Mario has no need for speech. Were a game such as Final Fantasy to incorporate a mute main character, then I would dislike it, but currently, speechless characters are contained within a genre that requires a smaller focus on story, and is thus fine.

In Gta, it doesn't bother me when the character says bad words because it is reall part of the game.I think it's really annoying when your character can only say what the options allow him to say. Sometimes the options are really stupid. Also if the character talks it gives him a personality. As long as he talks at least a little bit it's all good.

The thing in this topic is if you like or dislike if the hero talk or doesnt talk in the game. There are games like crhono cross, alundra, alundra2, where the hero doesnt talk? I dont.It like you are a ghost or you cannot talk by some kind of magic or somethingAnd there doesnt appear any part where at least he is talking with someone even in the endings. I like to have a hero with his own life. for ex. Final fantasy 8He talk about his life, and he has his own opinion because a hero has a stong paper in the game and he need to talk to express wath he feel.

i hate because like cod he never does talk

i hate it when the main character doesn't talk. all he (or she) says is ".....................................................". still, games like Spyro, in which the main character talk, it's just as annoying because you have to wait.... and wait.... and wait... and wait.... untill your head explodes!!! :weep:

I only like it when they make fun of it in the game itself. You know, when the other characters comment on how the main character doesn't talk.

I don't really like it very much. It's more immersive when the main character can talk.

I'm okay with both ends of the spectrum, but I guess I prefer it when the main character talks - like Phoenix Wright. Because it adds to the feel of the game and connects you better.

Most games I play happen to be non-talk. It feels like the hero can express themselves. I think it would be great to have the choice of talking.

Eh, I hate these games, but I REALLY hate the games that you get to name your main character, and if its VA'd your name is never mentioned because of that. Its just...awkward. Being referred to as 'that guy' the whole time.I still don't know how to pronounce Tidus.

I know you can't reply to this message but I want to stress a point for the hero of final fantasy 8, and that is Squall. He doesn't talk about his own life, the narrator or shall I say the game progress tells you how the life of each character come about..'cause for me(not technically) but I find Squall, a guy with a few words, and that makes him (for me) a silent one.. every time there is a conflict he just frown and just mumble words in his head, don't you think? But for me just to be sync in topic, It doesn't matter if the character speaks or so, the gameplay and the story line what makes an rpg great.. =)

If the main character talks then it makes it harder for games that let you input the character's name to use voice acting. I also think it could be used for plot device, like in Fear 2 (other systems) your main character can't talk, so when they say 'let's split up' your character can't respond, saying "That's a f***ing horrible idea!"Either way it doesn't matter to me.

depends on the game. in mario, he talks, but the player can't hear him. in elder scrolls, you can choose phrases to which the other characters respond, but you still don't hear your character's voice. it can lead to a more distant character, but at the same time, makes it feel less like a puppet. the problem i have is that sometimes i start trying to talk at the game...

I like it, it adds more mystery, and sometimes looking at teh characters face and body language you can voice over your own ridiculous dialogue

I think it depends on the game in question, the influence of your main character, and the attempts of immersion of the player themselves.Games like Chrono trigger, with the main character Chrono being mute feel like the player was able to "fill in" the general text choice of yes and no when dealing with storyline portions by deciding what or how to reply, without having the main character say anything. in this way you could sort of put your own voice in for the main characters. Gives some games more immersion feel.I felt that Squall in FF8 was too jackassed to be willing to work with anyone, mostly because half of his text consisted of "I dont care" "go away" and stuff like that. Chrono never said anything, neither "lets go with the power of friendship!" or "omg my wounds they will not heal..." and felt more like the hero just because he didn't talk. I think in the end, the lack of main character talking was more for older games before voice talk was viable, and partially to help the player feel like they're really in the game. I know when characters say something in game, a lot of the time I just want to rewrite the game to say what I want, and that does kill the intended immersion factor a bit.
