Most games that do the whole main character doesn't talk that I've played I thought did it really well. Like metroid the whole story is narrated well and the backstory for samus aran is there and there is never a situation where she would need to talk anyway. Zelda I absolutly love The Legend of Zelda you basically know what he would say anyway because people in the game ask him questions and talk to him then keep going on as if he answered and based on what they say next you can add the correct words anyway and really lets you use your imagination. The Suffering for xbox you learn about the main character through flashbacks your actions in the game and what other people say and in his situation I wouldn't be in the mood to talk either. the Doom series well that was supposed to be just straight up action and the marine is the only human left around anyway so once again no one to talk to and you can just use your imagination put yourself in the characters place. As for some other certain characters such as Raikoh from Otogi the silent type just seems to fit them and the mood of the game at least for me.

It's good when you keep the silent protaganist - but the moment anyone makes a transition *e.g. the protagonist isn't the protagonist anymore*, and the character of choice starts talking, it usually ruins any conceptions that anyone has of him.

It's a mixed bag for me. I like hearing the various characters voiced (including the main character) as it brings them to life just that little bit more for me, but I don't really miss it when no one talks. But that's the key. I really don't like it when everyone in the game world speaks except yourself. When it's the protagonist's turn and you have to just read the dialogue, the stark contrast from speaking to silence interrupts my immersion more than anything.

there just called silent characters like in the pokemon games. i like it because it puts you in there spot you know? and there is really no way to not like the main character if he doesnt say anything or have a certain characteristic traits. its kind of like comparing books to movies in a sense, because on one hand the setting and how the characters look is up to you, but in movies its all just there for you, you just gotta pay attention lol.

I think it really only works in Nintendo's games. Everything else seems like it would be better if the character just talked. Like in Dragon Age, everyone else in the game talks, but your character is left out of the conversation. He shouts little lines when you fight and you even pick a voice type for him. So why no voice acting in conversations? Mass Effect did it perfectly.

Ermm,as for me,silent characters aren't much of a problem.Take a look at the Pokemon series. The main character,is always silent, with the exception of the part which you have to say yes or no.Custom Robo Arena always let the supporting characters speak, while you remain speechless. It may seem a little frustrating, but like Rogfeddd said,it adds to the mystery.

It's not to bad sometimes, like in Blue Dragon:Awakened Shadow .Your character is really calm even though s/he talks. Also in some Ds games your character may be a hot head like in Raganarok Ds, where your character jumps at the idea of tresure straight away. In other games, like Two Worlds. I try to make my character look as young as possible but his voice make him sound like his in his late 20's of early 30's. In Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor your character is completly silent while only talking when the game lets you. This means you can make and think up your characters personality. In my opinion, silent is better.

I don't care about this that much, except the hero is a super badass like Adol Christin. Among all mute characters, I hate Adol Christin the most... He's super passive, unlike Mario & Luigi (Mario & Luigi are only text-mute, they do can talk). It would be surprising if the mute character talks for a while.

It annoys me. In some games, the main character does not talk and have companions that talks for him. But during battles, you can hear him yell and stuff.

It's annoys me a little, and I would prefer for the character to talk so we can at least see his personality. But if he doesn't talk, I normally do it for him. :whistling:

It doesn't bother me, if the developer omits talking I'm sure its for good reason. Take Fable 1 and 2 the main character doesn't talk as far as I remember and that game is great.

I love it with Link in the Zelda games since it sort of becomes an in-joke within the game itself - but most times I don't mind either way. I think it's most effective in FP games - like in Halo 3 ODST - everyone talks to you but you don't talk back. WIthout giving you a voice the game lets you put your own words in your character's mouth.

It was ok for me to not hear Issac from the Golden Sun series not say anything the whole series, but I gotta admit not having the main character silent the whole time urks me a bit. I would like for them to say SOMETHING other than the command of YES/NO that I choose for them.

Oh, a great topic, this. Games that never allows the main character(yourself) to talk at all is simply horrible. It's as if the guy is mute. I believe that the game/games would be more interesting if the main char could actually add a few witty comments or so. Also, the lack of talking prevents romantic oral speech. A bad setback.

It depends entirely on the type of game. If the game has an involved narrative then your character should speak. If it's more of a sandbox type of game, then not speaking is acceptable to me.

I kinda hate it, like in pokemon fire red(i know, it's old)When people ask you a question, the only options, YES or NOLike on question in ruby version"what town are you from?"YES:YesTown? never heard of it...NO:don't wanna tell me?

I love it with Link in the Zelda games since it sort of becomes an in-joke within the game itself - but most times I don't mind either way. Link does not even need to talk, his facial expressions do the work :D

Pokemon and the Legend of Zelda are a given. The Persona series' protagonists are silent, but you can choose what to say for them during certain points in the game.Hell, The Shin Megami Tensei series in general have a crapload of silent protagonists. It depends on the game itself whether I like the silent protagonist.I personally think RPGs shouldn't have silent characters because that's a whole 'nother character that doesn't have any interesting dialogue. It's pretty lazy on the developers part.
