Considering it's size and how it's made, it's probably slightly fragile, but not too much.

I say the shoulder buttons are the only really easily damageable part of the DS.Given that I've already broken two DSs permanently . . .

I broke the hinge and heard other people of the same thing. But overall I don't think its too fragile since other functions are fine after dropping it.

the DS is not fragile, (atleast mine isn't) it went through alot of trouble, like geting dropped, getting hit by accident and even used as a weapon sometimes and it's still good, although has some little scratches.

Nope. I've dropped mine multiple times, and not a scratch has appeared. I even know this one guy who tried to get rid of their old, perfectly functioning DS (which the moron could've just SOLD) by running over it like roadkill. It was perfectly intact.

it's a flip handheld so it would break very easily if it was flipped opened. Mine already has 3 cracks on it. I accidently smashed on the wall :)

I drop my DS nearly every day and it still works like a charm. I've even dropped it and had it hit the floor and flip open. ^_^

Yes, it's fragile. I use a padded case for it. On the other hand, because it folds over, the screen is protected better than the screen on the PS. I haven't dropped it yet.
