Well assuming that you define child by its legal definition as minor and not specifying if its children or youth then its any individual whose age is below 18 then you meant to include all learning stages from primary to middle then high school. So I can only debate according to my country as I did not experience education in other countries. In Kuwait I believe children are not getting too much homework and that is because the role of the homework was not fulfilled and to prove that lets look at the definition of homework according to http://www.nisk.k12.ny.us(1) "is an integral part of a student's learning experience. To derive the greatest benefit from school "and from that we can conclude that doing homework helps the student apply and memorize his studies. The reason i believe children in Kuwait are not getting too much homework is that in most subjects they can't apply lessons from previous weeks to the new lessons without re reading them and from the previous course unless they take like 3 classes to remember for example in math in algebra in our class from previous years i remember that when we finished 1 variable equation and begun studying 2 variable ones most of the class couldn't solve anything they even asked the teacher what does "X" mean in like 1 week they forgot anything we studied because our homeworks were like 1 question in 2 days which was like 2x=1 give value of x but the teacher was giving optional homework which some of us were doing also in English we get like 1 homework in 3 days which is to turn a sentence to passive voice and the result is that even in 11th grade which I am in there are students who say "teacher I is hungry "and alot of common faults in grammer (i am a living proof :) ) I could go on with physics but then you would lol so much that you wouldnt continue to read.To make things clearer to you I will list homework assignments from the three stages1st grade we get the writing homework in Arabic like " I am john smith" or going to places" i want to go to the zoo" then we with math simple calculations 1+1=2 and in english we learn to write word fro "cat" to "hospital" but that is i2nd and third grade we learn to read and right longer sentences and short stories and learn subtracting and multiplying 4th we started science and geography and the same things in the previous grades 5th so here where the problem starts our teachers in 5th-9th grade simply dont care they gave someone 75% of marks on participation and homework for a student who only attended 2 day per year also they give us answers to text exams etc (i know i am getting out of topic when i talk about education in general in country but that is because i wanted to state the reason children didnt get / do homework is because they didnt need it) 10-12 grade the teachers take students with lack of understanding of all middle grade subjects so they dont give them work because they cant answer any)So in conclusion I believe children IN MY COUNTRY dont get too much homework and in the contrary they get too less homework (This is my first post in debate section but I have a selfish request to the staff if my post was not in according to the rules i hope you wont reduce my gp but just tell me what i did wrong so i can improve it later XD )(1)http://www.nisk.k12....s/homework.html

Im a graduate in highschool and i believe that getting homework to do, everyday, is beneficial in many aspects. A) Get use to the fact that, when people go to Univ/College they are faced with more assignments than a normal highschool student would recieveB) If homework is not given, then students have no work ethics to help them succeed in life, not just academically but in other aspects as well.

are children getting just too much homework now a days? I know many kids who are all honors and other such and they pretty spend their days in the house doing homework and doing it right. Or having a life and then just scribbling at 2am in the morning getting all their work done. Is enough enough or are kids never going to have a life on a school day ever again?Today for example my sister is a senior in High School and for jsut one subject in Psycology, she had to take notes on one chapter........that would be alright if the chapter wasnt 40 pages long

Thats nothing compared to me.I AM only in middle school but their homework distripbution rates are so large that i was sick for 3 days and then i figured out that i have 12 chapters, 4 chapters a day , about 20 pages per chapter......due tommarow. Thats only in 1 class. The other class (math) i got assigned a 188 question worksheet due on the same day as the 12 chapters, and i didnt even get tought how to do the thing!Apparently its "be here or miss the lesson which we wont teach to you because were going to tim hortans for the lunch hour like always." Ive never skipped in my life. And i never plan to, but now i know why some kids just cant handle the pressure of homework and go skipping........

After graduating from college and teaching in a high school and attending education seminars, I have to say that if students are getting too much homework, it's probably because the teacher doesn't know of a better way to teach them a subject. For example, chemistry is a very difficult subject to teach, and if the teacher is not prepared he/she will give out a lot of note-taking types of homework. All in all, though, I personally think kids have way too much free time on their hands in general, and a little extra homework wouldn't hurt. (I'm speaking in general, as in considering both very urban neighborhoods and the suburbias of the U.S.) Considering how many hours kids spend on average on entertainment and media, be it the television or internet or movies or video gaming (I see a lot of us are guilty...), I think the 40 page chapter is really nothing. (In my high school days, I read on average 30 pages a night per period, so a total of 180 pages and outlined them all and had problem sets due the next day without a problem and without a complaint. All of these were completed in 3 hours after coming back from after school activities with plenty of time to be a t.v. junkie and play video games AND get plenty of sleep for the next day as well as preparing my own lesson plans for the students I tutored.)If anything, extra homework (whether useful for the "real world" or not) is good for developing discipline skills (which is definitely a MUST in the working world).

As an IB senior student I can say that the homework americans complain about getting is much less than what we do, this is exemplified best when the IB does internal examinations and papers are sent from one IB school to another, on a regular basis american schools score a lot lower on ALL subjects than those in european schools

Well maybe your sisters teacher had been absent for a day or 2 and needed to catch up on lost time? however if its the case that shetakes notes on a chapter EVERY night for that subject, then thats just awful and i feel for her. High school is a tough time, but it will be worth it if she works hard at it.

Homework is just a way to make sure that students actually understand the material and are able to apply what they have learned. They're preparation for tests, and there really isn't such thing as too much homework since you can never be overprepared for tests. However, I think teachers should give homework considering the other homework that the students have. They shouldn't give them so much homework that the students will just rush over it carelessly and not learn anything at all.

i believe that the more homework high school children get the more they will be prepared to university. i personally didn't get too much homework. i didn't really do homework at all but i still had my good grades. and when i had to study for a test i wouldn't have more than 70 pages to study, easy to do in a day. seldomly for science i had more than 100 pages but nothing impossible.i believe homework quantity should be slowly increased troughout the years without big bang on page numbers.

I agree.. the education school should increase the workload for students... really what i think about the kids these days and wonder how bad they have become... if there were something to keep them occupy like home work during the summer vacation just like the Japanese education system, then kids now a days won't be so bad.

I can't say that 'too much' homework is that much of a problem. I was in Honors English and CPM Algebra II last year (9th grade) and I never had too much work, and likewise several of my Sophomore-Junior grade friends in Senior classes or harder have all said that it's not too hard and at best you might have maybe 8 hours of work in a given week, which when you take into account the weekends and the fact that we have a half hour of study hall every school day it comes out to 5 1/2 hours a week maybe, which is one hour a day at best with a half hour for the weekends.

I really dont think kids get to much homework. my average time it takes to do my hw is about 2-5 hours depends on the day and im in honors. Also my friend is in regular classes he get 1 hour of homework. the homework isnt hard or time consuming. personally i think there should be more homework is some grades. Also the education rate in the U.S. isnt that good. In some other counteries like South Korea and Japan they have atleast 8 hours of school. They have a higher education because they study more. In my opinon I belive there should be more homework and school time.

I guess that depends on what country you study in. When I was in Scotland, I got practically no homework, so I wasted most of my days on the PS2...Here in Korea though, kids get massive amount of homework. Most highschoolers here end school at 9 pm and then go to tutorial centers and go home at around midnight...Plus, they still have homework to do, so it really drains the energy out of them. I say, they should increase the amount of homework in some places and decrease the amount in other places.

kids should have less homework... they are just there to make u "memorize" the topic but i think its better if they gave more work in a single topic in class so it memorizes better... there might be less topics in one year but u will remember more of them with time, hell i cant recall anything i learned from school, i even forgot everything i knew at math... and i was good... not anymore i guess

I really don't think kids have that much homework, well in my case. Here is my reasons:1. Check the economy we are in. With this type of recession, it only shows that we are not having enough education.2. Competition is now becoming globalized. Basically, those from other countries can now compete for jobs in the U.S. Furthermore, some countries like China, Japan, Korea, India, and the likes have much more rigorous education systems than the one we have here in the U.S.3. It is one's choice to choose whether to do or not do the homework. All you got to do is prepare for the consequences should you neglect your work.

No, I dont think kids are getting too much homework because i think its for their own good. Homework is a way for you to practice when you are not in school. I get a lot of homework and you don't see me complaining. I would just do the homework like everyone else would. Now that I think of it, I like homework. No offense, but I think the people who dont want to do their homework because there is a lot are lazy.*NO OFFENSE*Bottom Line: Do your homework unless you want to fail.

I don't think kids are getting too much homework because it prepares them for college. College is not easy where you can just pass through it like grade school. Its hard stuff, and if you don't understand the material in class, you most likely have to try and learn it from the book on your own. So you should actually thank all your teachers that give you lots of homework and make you take a lot of notes because that's what you are going to be doing in college.

Yes, indeed. (at my school)But the homework amount is depends on school to school. But sometimes the teacher gives students many homeworks that is not important for the future, or even for the present day. -_-

Please elaborate more. Talk about the subjects and why they're not important. We need more detail from you if you're going to post in this section. -KM

i agree not all homework is important for the future. i definitely had my share of teachers who gave useless lectures and homework in class -_-but if you think of it, maybe doing all the homework no matter how useless it may seem, will just prepare you to work hard

wayy too much. I see my kid sister everyday, she has bags and bags of homework. Kids don't have time to do things like be a kid anymore. Now it's all about maths homework and essays. where are the good old days when we didn't have as much. i remember being given 10 words to remember the spelling at yr 3, not write a half page essay to do in a night. kids should be kids. Not cooped up at home.

In my opinion, we are. Being a graduate of...almost a month (:waaa:), I say too much. This is a pretty general night of homework for me:Math: 30-40 problems, all work MUST be shown using a GIVEN method even if I don't understand itHistory: 10 questions from a section. Questions must be written out and the short essay should be at least 3/4ths of a page longScience: Again, 10 questions from the section, unless there's a ditto or two that night. If questions, they MUST be written out.English: Take notes on Author, read something about given Author, do questions 1-12, write out questions. Short essay must also be 3/4ths of a page longThat's also not counting the essays I have to do. For Math, it's a CIM task, where I also MUST show my work. Also not counting projects for THOSE classes. That's also not counting a Foreign language course, where there are the lovely memorization exercises, work sheets, compositions, projects, and studying for tests/quizzes. Also not counting my other elective courses. That's busy work. It's not helpful in the slightest. I RARELY have time to go out on a given night, unless it's a Friday or I don't do two or three classes' work that night. Sorry teacher, but I have a social life too. To me, it seems like our teachers think they're the only ones giving homework on that particular night and it's not true.
