master chief is one of the spartan-2s a biomechanical being created from imersing children from a young age into military work, masterchiefs name is john, and he was taken at the age of 8, he is the last spartan, and this is because all his allies have met their end during the war, including his best friend,

there are a whole load of books on the story, they differ however to the story in the game as his fellow spartans survive for longer in the books than in the game

I find it so bizarre that Bungie created an elaborate backstory for the Chief and the rest of the Halo universe, yet not much of it comes through in the games. I guess they want you to buy the books.

Get the books, I have only read the first book, Fall of Reach, and it was great. The author isnt the best writer in the world, but the story itself is really good and keeps you hooked especially since we've already gained a connection to master chief

I heard that in Ghosts of Onix that we learn of some Spartan-II's surviving and reaching the Light Planet... and it looks to me that Chief was headed for such a planet at the end of Halo3... so...

I was kind of disappointed when i found out that you didn't get to see Master Chief unmasked in Halo 3. But then again, it keeps that element of mystery.

Iunno i thought the ending to halo was way to cliche... and with master chief... yeah its cool that hes mysterious.... but they could have given him some sort of identity

One could, and I will, argue that they did give John 117 a Identity. He is the Master Chief, the greatest warrior of all times, a man of great skill, ability, strength, skill, and above all, LUCK. I know some people will argue that the point of playing a video game is to play the game, but I say read the books. Belive me, the backstorys are fantasticly written, and need to be read if your all about the plotline. This is not a Roleplay, it's a shooter, so detail is not to heavy on plot, or at least, on backstory. Start with 'The Fall of Reach', that will get you where you need to go for a start.Oh! And as for the 'cliche' ending... thats not really suprising. The hero saves the day, but he is left behind. Thats just a sad truth. My older brother is a Marine, and his life was saved by a great hero. That hero died to save him, and the rest of his squad. It's the same thing, only this time, it was a hero who saved more then just a few good men, but all of the universe, who has been left behind. No one shall remember his name, just his picture, and his number: 1.1.7. Master Chief. Thats just how it is, and I personally think it was a great ending, because there is so much you can do with that, to make such a story even greater, to add to it, bring back the hero, and recreate the story.

Basically, hes a child soldier (look the term up) with uber-military training and genetically modified. Lol, the movie. That deal keeps falling through because Hollywood wants to control the (movie) storyline and Bungie is afraid they'll royally screw it up. (The first book is basically video game-Starship Troopers and Hollywood screwed the Starship Troopers movie.)And the Ghosts of Onix book is really just a side-story to explain what happens/ed to the other Spartans (yes there are other -surviving- Spartans contrary to popular belief). The Master Chief isn't even featured.Oh and the ending is FAR better than the standard "hero wins war, hero returns home, the end, never mind the fact that he just spent days/weeks/months/years/decades slaughtering hundreds/thousands and he now has to adjust to a peacetime/civilian life hes never known".

Uh, Master Chief is, has been, and always will be, the main Character of Halo. 'Halo, Combat Evolved' Revolves around a super-human soilder known as MASTER CHIEF, Spartan 117.Halo 2 is a continuation of his story, and the set up for the final battle, the start of the collapse of the covenate powers, and a way of tieing up loose ends, fast.Halo 3 is the finisher, the ending of the play, the final act in this three part story of the superwarrior known as 'Master Cheif'. He goes out and saves the day, destroying the 'Halo' battle system and saving the universe. If Master Cheif is not the main character, then who is?

if you want to know who master cheif is, i suggest you "interact" with him, by which I mean play Halo. You get to know the storline via a fun and enjoyable game;) but, if you want to read the books, you can do that, but i personally find it too confusing

MASTER CHIEF is only his rank and what people call him. He is one of the people in the spartin 2 projects. He is very skilled in war. There are other spartins too. Though the game says they died that is partly true although some are still alive lik fred, linda, kelly, and jurt although he dies in the book ghost og onyx. Oh yeah they started the spartin 3 project though they're less as cool.

Master chief is a SPARTAN=11 who fights the aliens and blows up the halos (which are giant space rings NOT LIKE THE RINGS IN LORD OF THE RINGS that kill EVERYTHING even the FLOOD and he got this SUPER MARK MJOLNER armor. He's super strong and tall and he doesn't talk but when he does it means he's going to do something cool and he doesn't afraid of anything.
