Does the story matter as much or even more as the actual game play, graphics etc?

I don't think the story is as important, but it's definitely a plus if you want a successful game. It heps to keep you interested, and even a little invested in the characters, so you actually want to win. That's how I am, anyway ^^

Story is extremely important especially in RPG games. Final Fantasy 7 wouldn't be FF7 without the story! Hell all the FF's wouldn't be good without the story.

Agreed with Pokemon Trainer - Plot is extremely, unbelievably important. As Pokemon Trainer's example states, FF7 would be nothing without plot, and it's possibly the most famous Final Fantasy game ever! Though there are many, many awesome games merely for playing, plot definately helps them be the best.

I would say, as the first impression, it makes a big impact. Once I know the game, not so much though.

Sort of. I don't think it's a requirement for the game to have a great plot, but it sure helps the ratings.

I mainly looks for type of game first. The story just makes the game more interesting. If you really want to know what happens you tend to play it more.

I don't think there is much point of playing games if there is no story. A game like Assassins creed, for example, had a well paced storyline, great graphics, and drawpoint limits that make your eyes drool. but it wouldn't have been so great if the story was nonexistent.I know a lot of people feel underwhelmed by the game; the game has a few new features, like the free run, for example. and the assassinations were fundamentally the same. But the story drives it on. So yeah, i think the story is the lead part of a game.

well that depends a lot.. a story can make a good game without good gameplay thats true but if it has good gameplay/graphics it may also turn into a good game thats my opinion

Most games don't need a story, but the point of RPG is the story.

It's crucial. I like every sort of game, but nothing replaces knowing WHY you're saving the world or finding small statues and alike.

Good story doesn't make a game more fun, but it does make it more involving and gives you insentive to complete it. It gives the game an overall greater feel.

Yes, of course. If the game has a story, then I'm not buying it.

I guess it depends on the game. I don't think I'd want an immense storyline full of betrayal, lust and forgotten alliances in a Billiards game.Although there are those oddball Japanese-only games like SD Gundam Dodgeball for the Super Famicom that combine dodgeball with RPG elements. I guess those would be an exception..

Sometime yes, sometimes not. It's a sum of factors, and I guess story is among them somewhere. Some games probably wouldn't matter, I never knew the story of Doom and I enjoyed it. I guess I grew up or something. ;) Gameplay is mostly important, that's what I think, but the story also should rock, specially on games of the RPG, RTS genre. Not letting adventure and FPSs down, of course.

Yes, like pokemon. Many tasks in a story and it's a big hit.
