even though story helps sometime it can actually take away from the games appeal, for instance a really great battle, doesn't matter how long, could be interrupted by like 45 minutes worth of non voice over text that can't be skipped, just to lead to another battle and an hour of dungeon crawling... i know i would hate that game

I think the story is a great help to making games more fun. It does depend on the kind of game though. A race game like Mario Kart doesn't need a story, but an rpg without a story is impossible. :)

Story should never take backseat to graphics. Having a narrative is what makes it worth playing, otherwise you're just wasting time.

With some games it does. It really depends on what the point, the design, and what the games focuses are. Its a give and take.

A game doesn't need a stellar story to be great. Castlevania is one of my favorite series and the story is horrible. It's always the same Dracula is going to be resurrected spiel and you have to kill him, while being altered slightly each time. However the series is wonderful if a bit over rated by some. However it definitely doesn't hurt. I mean look at the MGS series.. it's absolutely horrible as a stealth game, and isn't that great for action, but the story and cutscenes make it one of the best out there.

Story is important, just think if the Metroid series didn't have a story, it would have sucked!

Yeah it does. Its hard to find nowadays with all of the cliche characters and storylines, but when you do find a game with a good story its exciting. Games with a good story really pull you in and make you feel for the characters as if you've know them. Those are the games that stay with you and inspire you in some way or another in whatever you do.

To me, playing a game is a lot like reading a book. That's why I usually play RPG games; games PLUS story. Other games are also fine if they have nice gameplay, but I still love RPG's the most.

It depends on the game, No story in tetris and that game is so freakin addicting... But adventure games and rpg's have to have a good story in my opinon to catch the players attention

Heck yeah I think that the story is one of the most vital parts of any game take the GTA series it has kinda like an opptional story you can choose to do missions and be part of the story or you can run around finding tanks and blowing the city up like I like to do!!

No, I usually get really mad at video game story-lines. I never pay attention to them. I mean, yeah sometimes a story can aid in the game-play, but I'm the type of gamer who doesn't play a lot of video games. When I do, I just want to kill everything in my sight without worrying about my characters needs; have enough of my own. =]

For me, I think it's the driving force. Who wants to play a present gen repetitive game with no background story, no immersion, no fun?

Most of the time, I look for the style of the gameplay than the story itself...

Yeah, a good story is a plus for any game to get you interested in it(Unless it has *really* good gameplay).Makes you think how Mario got so famous...

RPGs need a good storyline, because otherwise people will get bored pretty quickly. Another game, say a platformer, or a shooter, doesn't need a very impressive storyline because the game-play is very absorbing. then there are games which combine both to make some pretty kick-@*# games and they are teh pwnage. and stuff.

Almost all games now have a story, and although it may not seem to be important for a lot of people think of how frustrating it'd be to run around and kill things for no apparent reason. You'd fight 40 CPUs in a fighting game, slay 500 fiends in a cave, or collect 200 orbs for no reason. You need a story to drive a game these days.
