It's been a long, ridiculous ordeal. Sony trying to make the UMD an acceptable format for media.http://pspupdates.qj...g/49/aid/122858I personally think it's a horrible idea.

Personally I think ever since Universal Studios dropped UMD that it was on a road down to hell, with the loss of a big backer like Universal I don't see how people like the guy in that article can say it can be recovered, it is similar to HD vs Blu-Ray for God's Sake, haven't we had enough of that already lol

Yeah it's just lame. Now with iPod's and iPhones and larger Memory Sticks, people can just download movies and place them on the devices and just use them a lot easier. It's dead for movies, yes. They should name it PMD, Playstation Media Disc, cause it's not good for anything else lol

They should have focused more on their memory cards and making movies available for download, sort of like the itunes store does.Either way, it was a crap idea.

That'll also be hard though, since memory sticks generally don't hold a lot of space, people would need to have at least 4gb sticks, and still movies are like 700MB each.

I actually have a 4 gig stick and most movies i download are less than 500mb (actually a lot are 250mb). I download movies from a site i would post the link here but i dont know if i am allowed. Also about umd's i would never buy a umd to watch a movie. Its more convenient just to watch movies that are on my memory stick.

iPod killed UMD the way wal-mart killed small businesses. now that sony failed with the UMD they try and pull off the blu-ray thing. i think sony should just give up on making movie formats and go back back to their games...sans the 4D graphics of course.

It's official, new UMD Movies will be in the range $9.99 to $14.99. Unless Maxconsole got it wrong again, or Sony lied.

if sony wants umd to be a great format, they need to release it to the public as a usable media. release blank umds and umb writers and stuff. also have more hardware support umd as a storage format. it will skyrocket if it is used as such.

I'm sorry... UMD what? well ask that to anyone who owns a PSP here and almost half of them will not even answer what they are. Almost everyone here will just fill their memory stick with ISO's either through their computer or through vendors selling phone accessories whom will also fill their PSP, IPODS or cells with mp3, mp4 and of course ISOs. It may not be my place to say since original games here cost more than an arm, but hopefully sony will not only make the UMD's cheap but also a playable media with their products (blu-ray players with UMD support for example maybe?)

Sony always trying to create a Monopoly.... As beta format, minidisc and the audio/video format the they create. Even the MS is another effort to create a SONY-WORLD!! Personally, Im fan of Sony but Ill never understand those tries to be the ONLY ONE on the market, i mean, the are the best already on many branches of electronics and they just needed their great quality for that. The PSP has no rival on the portable games market, DS? is a if you compare it with psp...... But, UMD will be another failure attempt by sony to insert a "winner" format as BETA was in 80's... Now, there is a global world with many other companies offering COMPATIBLE devices because the idea now is to use the same DATA or INFO on your home PC, on your office PC, on your car, on your handheld no matter the type or model... but no, sony wants that you HAVE ALL SONY, but not for his supreme quality, they want you to have all sony because just the sony models are compatible... UMD is an already Dead Format!!!

umd's definitely appear to be doomed. the cost is too high, reports of them breaking are numerous, umd movie sales are down down down, and the lack of good original games just further decreases the appeal of umd's. of course games like FF Tactics, MGS portable ops, and god of war get lots of die hard sony fans excited and further increase psp sales for a short burst. but overall the ds is just kicking sony's ass. shame, as i love sony and the games they offer.

The UMD is going to die eventually. I love how this so called "Universal" Media Disk is limited to only one system. Maybe if it was made more widely available it would survive but I doubt that is going to happen.

It is an ok idea for me, but its in a class all its own. Dosent compete with the DS since it actually uses a disc format.

When it intially came out, I was excited. But the fact that I can make my own UMD discs kinda sucks. It would make the PsP extremely flexible.

Yes I agree, Sony best bet would have been to develop their memory cards to a peak memory capacity higher than 4GB, so a iTunes like system couldn't be entirely be out of the question.

well i think its going to all change like when the 1st PS and sega went to CD so will handhelds, that is if memory cards dont get any bigger other wise people can just download their games instead of carrying them around seperatly.

umd's definitely appear to be doomed. the cost is too high, reports of them breaking are numerous, umd movie sales are down down down, and the lack of good original games just further decreases the appeal of umd's. of course games like FF Tactics, MGS portable ops, and god of war get lots of die hard sony fans excited and further increase psp sales for a short burst. but overall the ds is just kicking sony's ass. shame, as i love sony and the games they offer.

ok i agree with most of what u said but that DS is kicking PSPs ass is just plain wrong lol, most of the DS games are for kids, dont use the full graphic potential of the system, and the touch screen gimmick isnt utilised with anything substantial, nintendo has a history of squabbling its great ideas for nothing but second rate stuff that could have come out on their last system.
