i would say it's a dead format in terms of a movie format. as a game format i'd say it's pretty decent

Yes I agree, Sony best bet would have been to develop their memory cards to a peak memory capacity higher than 4GB, so a iTunes like system couldn't be entirely be out of the question.

Well they have the PSN, which is similar to the itunes type system....the problem is that it's weak and doesn't have all the titles. They also have been promising PSX games that haven't been delivered. This is basically pushing those of us who follow the PSP scene closely, to continue hacking and pirating.

They should have just made small discs or something. At least Sony is succeeding with Blu-Ray.

UMDs are the worst. They're slower than MS and with the newer games now they don't have the space to put as much as they could. They don't need space constrictions on MS, so they don't have to compress games to make them fit on the UMD which slows them down. And people are all the time finding better ways of encoding movies to make them smaller and still look awesome. If they got rid of UMD they could take the slot off PSP and if not make it smaller, they could add more features in that space.

UMD has been dead for a long while. The only reason they still exist is because the PSP still exists. They wont put movies on 'em anymore, so all you'll see are the games.

I always thought that it was funny that it was called a "Universal Mini Disk" since it only worked on the psp. That being said I wouldn't call it a dead format as long as games are still being released for the psp. The UMDs are still going to be sold and even after the psp goes away we will still see UMD be sold for atleast two years while stores get rid of back stock.

Yea it was i bad idea i don't no what they were trying to accomplish in making them yea there smaller then the mini DVD brand and they still hold the 4.3gb but that they would ever replace say DVDs or standard game disc is just a dream cause they are more expensive then a standard game disc and who pay that when they could save $5-$10 on a standard disc and like a previous poster stated they do iso downloads from the ps store sowhy not do like an itunes thing where they can just download games, music, video and give up on umds because there going to fall off eventually.

How about the UMD movies? are they still available? I havent seen them in ages here, the stores here in holland don't seem to carry them anymore, i always found them very practical when traveling by train LOL! GOD >=( I miss having a PSP, dropped the thing back in 07 ( fell 2 inches to the ground) and the screen cracked on the inside, it was already over its waranty so i never bothered to have it fixed.

There isn't realy a direct equivalent in the marketplace, It just looks like no-one is interested in having a small media drive that doesn't support writable discs, especially now that flash memory is so cheap.

UMD's bah. Yet another genius move from Sony on the media type. Goes well with their fine idea of Minidisc . OK MDs weren't that bad back in the days for us musicians when hard drives and memory discs weren't this cheap/fast. One thing I really don't understand with the UMD's is that PSP actually memory card slot. Console would have surely been cheaper to make if it didn't have both.

Looks like the con census is bye bye UMD's. The casings do break easy. It would be cool if the retail outlets start providing WLAN access to download games, but I wonder if the price point of memory sticks will be enough for people to break away from disc and carts. For Sony to get rid of UMD's, they would really need to lower the price of down-loadable games vs UMD games.

UMD is definitely dead.......... It is also confirmed that the new PSP will have no UMD slot and it will have a hard drive built in to itBTW that is a sweet site in the first post I go there for all news (of course not as good as this site though lol).

UMD's are just too expensive and I'd rather watch a movie on my PC than on its tiny screen and odd speakers.I like the Download center ISOs.Found many a good one in there so i'm never gonna buy one( not that i have any in a nearby store).

I feel that it had potential to become a great format if they had a better design they should have designed it so that there was not one place it could be scratched but they left the tiny gap that allowed for scratching and the metal disc support in the middle really cheap and unreliable I had three pop out on me now with those changes and making a UMD Movie player for a tv it could have taken off as they next great thing but it was basically bad planing.

Music and movie UMDs are, in my opinion, a complete waste of money. Even ignoring the cost and convenience part of it, you must remember that UMDs can't be used for ANYTHING else (not even the new PSPs!), and in any case, watching movies on a PSP isn't good enough an experience for me to buy them for it.
