Alright, here's the story: GameSpot is offering this promotion where if you trade in a working GBA SP or DS you can get a DS Lite for 89.99 USD (as opposed to 129.99 USD). I've had my DS ever since the Christmas of the year it came out (Nov 2004, so December 2004), and frankly it's already showing its age. Here's why I'd like to trade:
  • Most importantly, the touch screen on my old DS. Over the years it's been subjected to things like Elite Beat Agents, The World Ends With You, BOTH Trauma Center games and BOTH Ouendan games, leaving the middle of the screen kinda unresponsive and requiring extra pressure to prevent in-game cursors from jumping around (it's most obvious on games that require any sort of line drawing).
  • The battery life. I'm not exactly sure when I hit that 500 charges line as "advertised" in the DS' manual, but I've kept track of the life recently during car/plane trips and I swear the thing only lasts 5 hours on a full charge now, as compared to the 10 hours it's supposed to.
  • The stylus size. Small=crampy, simple as that. In fact, during a period where I misplaced/lost my last regular DS stylus I just borrowed my 'lil brother's DS Lite stylus. DAMN if it didn't make a pretty big difference in comfort.
These are things against it-- money actually isn't one of them. :D :
  • The buttons, actually, the D-pad specifically. I've held my brother's DS Lite several times and the new D-pad feels... oh, I don't know, a bit unprecise or slippery? Maybe it's just his Lite being really dirty because he doesn't take care of it well, but it's still an issue I'd like to get more input on.
  • The power switch. While I'm pretty damn sure it's an uncontested improvement over the original DS' power button ("whoops my thumb slipp-- NOOOOOO") my minor concern here is that I tend to put my DS in my pocket when I'm on the go, and I'm wondering if the power slide switch thing is easily accidentally, well, slid.
  • The available colors su... nevermind I just spotted the Cobalt/Black DS Lite so disregard that.
  • Lastly, the most minor of minor nitpicks: blah blah GBA games stick out blah blah not that bad at all unless you have large hands blah blah.
Amusingly (conveniently!), the GameSpot website lists the offer as expiring August 10th. I've been vacationing in the U.S. since mid-June, family visiting family, and my own family is due to fly back to Thailand August 9th or 10th. It's just barely enough time to get some good input from other gamers (yes, that refers to those of you out there who are still awake and reading) before making my final decision, right? Thank you very much for your time.

I would say trade it. The DS lite has lots of advantages over the original DS, in the fact that the backlight is much brighter and the stylus is bigger and easer to hold. i personaly have had no problems with the buttons being unprecice. they are as accurate as the DS or the GBA. as for the power slide, if it does tun on in your pocket, then the lid will be closed and power saving will be on, so no problems there.Although the touch screen is a bit faulty, the people at gamespot might be rather picky about if it's "fully working" or not. but it shouldent be a problem.

Ah, thank you. What I meant actually is playing it, putting it in sleep mode and then in my pocket. I'm wary of turning it OFF in my pocket, not on.

I put my DS lite into my pocket all the time sometimes on sleep mode and it has never turned off. So I don't think that it should happen to you unless you fiddle a lot with your pocket.

I just purchased a DS lite because my older DS broke. WAY BETTER. The simple fact that it has a brighter screen makes for better gameplay somehow. It feels a lot more simple, and is enjoyable to play with. I love it and say to anyone considering it "If you have to the money...Do it!"

Not in durability. DS Lite can break more easily than regular DS. And I believe DS regular actually has longer lifespan than Lite and not the other way around.

I also thought of the same thing with the DS Lite power button before I bought it. My friend said it's fine because it's indented as well as the DS will be on standby mode even if it is turned on. Plus, with my crystal case, it's quite unlikely that my DS will turn on/off in my pocket.Also... despite the DS Lite being a bit more fragile than the original DS, you can always buy a crystal case, or any other case that does make too much of the size on the DS Lite.

don'tthose DS lite people are just longing to take over the industry with their elusive colours and their big styluses, keep your good old blue DS, with a little disk wizard (or whatever it's called, you can find it at EB games or gamespot, it's supposed to repair delicate surfaces, my friend says it works pretty well) the screen will look good as new. and, you can always be a little bit careful not to let your thumb slip >.>

I also carry my ds lite around in my shirt pocket and have never had it shut off (aside from running out of juice while leaving it in sleep mode).

I like the lite a lot more than the plain one, it's smaller, and the back light is brighter. The only thing i don't like about it is the start and select buttons are weird.

definitely the ds lite. it's cheaper, smaller, and lighter than that big clunky original.

But the big clunky original is harder to break than is the DS Lite.

Which that is true. My cousin's Original DS has held up better then my DS lite, since dropping it on a hard surface has messed up the flip top, and the R/L buttons. But I would still go with the lite, since it's more portable, can change the brightness to 4 different degrees, a slicker style, and if you leave it in your pocket, it won't turn off unless, as stated before, you are fidgety with your pockets or the DS runs out of juice in sleep mode. But, by all in all, you should go for the deal and get a DS lite, especially if it will also improve your playability, compared to your original DS.

this is a hard question because both have some good qualities. the ds lite, as we all know is smaller and brighter. but the ds original is also good bucause of its rounded edges. i say the ds lite is better but they should round the edges on it like the ds original

i asy trade ds lite is better than the original dsThe old DS was bigger and although the screen was not as bright as the DS LITE, I never had too much trouble with seeing. The old DS was able to fully hold Gameboy advance games without them sticking out as much asin the ds lite version, also the ds lite version has a plastic cover to keep dust out of the gameboy advance game slot something the other ds did not have. Also the old DS came with a strap so youcan loop it around your wrist, the newone its sold seperatley. The new one is lighter and little more attractive. with bigger screen and just right for small hands not so much for bigger though, lol. Also the pink looks cute but its a cheap dime store pink not a deep rich pink so stick with black orwhite.DS lite is backlit so you can play it in almost any light. The old DS is hard to see in brighter rooms and outside (or in a car often). The lite is also a little smaller, has a longer battery life, and is a little sturdier. As far as what they can play it is exactly the same

the DS Lite's screen is a little bigger and a little brighter, also its smaller and more compact, and the buttons are placed in better places so your fingers dont get so cramped

I think the regular DS is better. In my opinion It looks more durable and the the DS lite start & select button is weird and the placement of the power button is kinda weird(what happens if ya thumb slip). The only feature I would be interested mostly in is which has more VOLUME! :gbasp:

Umm...sturdier...I think I have to disagree although I've never hold a DS lite but from first impression it looks fragile.
