Alright, here's the story: GameSpot is offering this promotion where if you trade in a working GBA SP or DS you can get a DS Lite for 89.99 USD (as opposed to 129.99 USD). I've had my DS ever since the Christmas of the year it came out (Nov 2004, so December 2004), and frankly it's already showing its age. Here's why I'd like to trade:
- Most importantly, the touch screen on my old DS. Over the years it's been subjected to things like Elite Beat Agents, The World Ends With You, BOTH Trauma Center games and BOTH Ouendan games, leaving the middle of the screen kinda unresponsive and requiring extra pressure to prevent in-game cursors from jumping around (it's most obvious on games that require any sort of line drawing).
- The battery life. I'm not exactly sure when I hit that 500 charges line as "advertised" in the DS' manual, but I've kept track of the life recently during car/plane trips and I swear the thing only lasts 5 hours on a full charge now, as compared to the 10 hours it's supposed to.
- The stylus size. Small=crampy, simple as that. In fact, during a period where I misplaced/lost my last regular DS stylus I just borrowed my 'lil brother's DS Lite stylus. DAMN if it didn't make a pretty big difference in comfort.
These are things against it-- money actually isn't one of them.

:
- The buttons, actually, the D-pad specifically. I've held my brother's DS Lite several times and the new D-pad feels... oh, I don't know, a bit unprecise or slippery? Maybe it's just his Lite being really dirty because he doesn't take care of it well, but it's still an issue I'd like to get more input on.
- The power switch. While I'm pretty damn sure it's an uncontested improvement over the original DS' power button ("whoops my thumb slipp-- NOOOOOO") my minor concern here is that I tend to put my DS in my pocket when I'm on the go, and I'm wondering if the power slide switch thing is easily accidentally, well, slid.
- The available colors su... nevermind I just spotted the Cobalt/Black DS Lite so disregard that.
- Lastly, the most minor of minor nitpicks: blah blah GBA games stick out blah blah not that bad at all unless you have large hands blah blah.
Amusingly (conveniently!), the
GameSpot website lists the offer as expiring August 10th. I've been vacationing in the U.S. since mid-June, family visiting family, and my own family is due to fly back to Thailand August 9th or 10th. It's just barely enough time to get some good input from other gamers (yes, that refers to those of you out there who are still awake and reading) before making my final decision, right? Thank you very much for your time.
