Sonic the Hedgehog. That's all there is to say. I mean, honestly. The Zones: Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light (my favorite), Scrap Brain, and Final (if you'd really consider that a Zone, at all). The music in it... Ask me a Zone, and I'll sing the tune with "dah"s and "nah"s. Sonic has some of the most memorable, and catchiest, soundtracks of the era. For the Mega Drive/Genesis in '91, the graphics are pretty impressive; rather, they're quite amazing! The sound effects... Hm... It took me some thought. Though, all in all, the cartoon-like noises for when you blow up a robot make the game that much more enjoyable. Not to mention that every friend I've had, to date, knows every sound effect from the game, as well.Anyway, to conclude...It started what is still one of the biggest and longest running franchises in video game history. The last thing to say about it... The first music track and Zone that seemingly 99% of people think of when they think of Sonic the Hedgehog: Green Hill Zone.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles was my personal favorite. The graphics were rich and vibrant, the music was awesome, and the levels were just tough enough without being a total pain to do, usually (I'm looking at YOU, Carnival Night).

Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles both seem like my favorites in different ways. On one hand, Sonic 2 was -the- first game I ever played on the Genesis, and was also the first game I ever completed on my own; in addition, the level designs were fun and multiplayer was exciting. Sonic 2 also holds my absolute favorite chaos emerald mini-games. Sonic 3 & Knuckles, however, has so many levels, and also has an extremely intricate plot despite the lack of any dialogue between characters! Getting to see everyone's 'special mode' also made this game for me, even if we don't get to see any of them (minus Sonic's) ever again.
