My favorite by far, aside from the Pokemon series, would be Monster Rancher Advance II. You get to breed, train, and test your monsters abilities in arena type battles. The graphics are outdated but it was by far my biggest time sink aside from Pokemon.

The new Pokemon Gold/Silver made the monster-raising aspect of the games much better with the pokewalker and being able to talk to the lead in game - it actually seemed like you were raising them, not just collecting hundreds of soldiers to buff up for battle. I guess if you're not a collector it'd be fine though. Monster Rancher DS also does a good job, being that there doesn't seem too much of an adventure aspect, just pure monster-raising.

I think Pokemon and Digimon are great games because you get to train and evolve them to become stronger and get through the battles.

I found the Chrono Trigger mini-monster training game to be fun. And, isn't SPORE Creature one? (I've only played a demo of it, so I couldn't get past the monster-making part...)Otherwise there's Rune Factory.

Well I guess the new Pokemon Black/White would qualify. Harvest Moon is pretty good too though there's not much to the monster raising aspect.

I love monster rancher. It was better back on the playstation when you could put in all different kinds of cds and unlock different monsters the new style drawing or talking into the mic arent nearly as fun ways to get new monsters. But other then that the game has transferred pretty well to the ds and is a fun play.

There's two that set the standard for the monster raising game in my opinion, Monster Rancher and Pokemon. These two games really will force you to think about how you raise up and train your monster, and how to take care of them.

I would probably say Pokemon. I've always been a fan of the games. However I did not like Ranger or Mystery Dngeon

I'm surprised that not many people said Monster Rancher. That's a really fun one and it pretty much fits the bill of what you're asking for.

Well, the only game I know of that fits this description is Pokemon. and it is a good name, and you train multiple pokemon until they get to level 100. So, I think Pokemon is the best "monster raising game" then.

I would think pokemon...it was the original monster game. a lot of the later ones, like digimon and stuff just werent as good....summon night swordscraft story was pretty good but there was a lot less customizability than in pokemon

definitely pokemon. the amount of depth and strategy that goes along with the game really does make it an ongoing attraction. although the plotline of each generation is essentially the same (and is due for a revamp), the games still definitely hold enough value to get people to buy the next version, as proved by the fact that pokemon is still around today. ^_^

Thought its not necessarily a monster raising game I think the original Front mission can offer mechs that you can customize, colorize, and level as well as adapt skills to them. I mean the only thing missing is being an actual monster but we are grown up here, yes?
