Well, my only real concern is backward compatibility really, so the resource consumption I could still live with...

Well, the beta is. I'm not sure about the final release. 7 beta can run just about any program, even if they are not made for it. Drivers, on the other hand...

Now that they are finally ditching GDI you are going to see lots of older (and perhaps even some newer) programs either have problems or completely break because of hacks and tweaks they were built with to deal with GDI problems. I don't know for certain that it goes back all the way to windows 1.0 but I know for sure that 3.0, 3.1, and 3.11 used it.And yeah, you can bet that they will once again find away to break most of the drivers out there. I bet this is really going to tick off Lexmark. They still haven't finished updating all their drivers to work with Vista. Some models have custom controller chips in them that are apparently completely incompatible!

... In short, as far as bw compat is concerned, I'm going to be disappointed big time? Or are you talking about only drivers and not applications?

It depends on rather they add in some sort of a backwards compatibility emulation layer or not. And of course on how well it works if they do. (Yes Xbox 360 I am in fact looking at you!) Most programs relied on standard APIs and should be just fine but stuff where they came up with their own code may crash and burn. One example that I think might show up is an older game called Metal Marines.http://www.mobygames...nes/screenshotsThat is a rather extreme example of a program doing some VERY nonstandard things but there will be others. I believe it may be the only RTS to ever use MDI

OK, one more question... I chose to download the Hindi x86 beta, and got two files, one ISO with the installer, the other with the language pack. But the ISO with the language pack has no autoruns. So... am I supposed to somehow integrate those 2 ISOs? =S Or will Windows 7 prompt me later on to mount the smaller ISO for seperately installing the language pack once the OS itself is installed?

I haven't played with windows 7 yet but at a guess I'd say you have to install it normally and then add the language pack.

I installed Windows 7 on a spare partition, and can say i absolutely hate it. Even with no programs running, it's using 60% CPU, and close to 800MB of memory. o.OAs for CPU usage, I can understand, since I'm currently rocking a socket 478 Pentium 4, but 800MB of memory? That alone definitely makes it not worth running. Even Vista, being the resource whore it is, doesn't use that much.

Yeah, but memory is practically free nowadays. TigerDirect has a deal on 2GB of Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 memory for $10 going on right now. You can't tell me that's not worth the newfound stability of Win7. Plus, it's a beta. I'm sure it'll get better. Apparently, there'll be a netbook version as well, which I'm looking forward to for my Acer Aspire One.

EXACTLY 3 Gigs to the very last byte (3 x 10243) or just very close to 3.00 GB? :(

Well... to the first two decimal places that are displayed in Windows Explorer.

Dunno about you, but I personally would laugh in the face of anybody who expects more memory to increase performance when you're heavily bottlenecked at the CPU. 'sides, my mobo can only handle slow crap, which wouldn't help anyways. :(

You can't tell me that's not worth the newfound stability of Win7

Linux and XP are my primary OSes. Windows 7 is just Vista without UAC and a lot of bugfixes.

You shouldn't have to throw RAM at it just for the OS to run. My system only has 785 meg of RAM being used and that is with firefox using 245 meg of it! Chalk up 81 meg for skype, 57 meg for deluge + 12 meg for the web interface for deluge. 26 meg for pidgin, 10 for ario + 11 for the MPD panel controls + 6 meg for MPD itself. 5 meg for mysql, 5 meg for apache2, half a meg for SSHd, and another half a meg for pureftpd.Do the math and the normal (non server) parts of the system are only taking 326 meg of RAM. This machine only has 1 gig of RAM installed. I'm running multiple servers from a single machine AND using it for multiple communications programs AND sufing the web and still using less RAM than it takes to even boot Windows 7. And this is what you call progress?

Well... to the first two decimal places that are displayed in Windows Explorer.

The exact size in bytes should be shown in parentheses when you click properties. Calculate if it's exactly 3 GB! :(

I installed Windows 7 on a spare partition, and can say i absolutely hate it. Even with no programs running, it's using 60% CPU, and close to 800MB of memory.

BTW, I don't understand how you people are getting just the OS to eat up THAT much RAM... I just persuaded my little sis (well, she's an 8th grader, so... it wasn't difficult, given 7's looks :( ) to let me use her PC as a guinea piggy for 7, so I'm getting to run it now... Right now, while it's idle, it only consumes 490 MB with Aero style theme activated (still not impressive, I know, but still, not 700+, no way, and it does start up almost as fast as XP). It's only got Office+NOD32+Adobe Acrobat+VLC+2 messengers installed as of now. What else are you guys running? Also, I need time to get used to the interface... so, anyone know how to get this thing to hibernate?

the newfound stability of Win7

Save it until the retail version, pal. Are you aware that there were severe issues in the beta including one where WMP would permanently screw your MP3 files unless they're read-only (even though an update is available for that now)? It will probably get better later on as they fix stuff, but still, don't comment on stability so quickly just by using the beta... All this pre-release hype and praise and anticipation is giving me a deja vu feeling, which actually creeps me out... =S

I want to know how the GAMES are on 7. Sometimes, I shut off Windows Explorer to get maximum gaming speed; hopefully I won't have to do the same on the new OS. I'm downloading it right now, and it better not suck, because I hate Vista passionately. If I had Ulltimate, I'd be able to downgrade to XP...

The truth is that if you gained performance from terminating Windows Explorer, you're probably so strapped for CPU usage and memory that Win7 will be worse for you.

I want to know how the GAMES are on 7.

IDK if it's just me, but everytime I run a fullscreen game at a resolution different than that of desktop, upon quitting the game the GPU drivers fail (and Win7 somehow "recovers" and brings me to the desktop... No restart needed though). This is really the BETA, isn't it? :)But I guess the fact that Win7 is able recover from a device failure without crashing with a BSoD and restarting is also something. Sigh... The backward compatibility issue finally rears its ugly head... >.< Neither Daemon nor Alcohol 120%/52% will install on 7 coz the SPTD drivers needed for the virtual drives to work can't properly register itself. Does anyone have a virtual drive emulator that works on 7? I tried MagicISO and it screwed my 7 pretty hard and I had to System Restore in safe mode... So very few games I can run on 7 ATM, please someone tell me a virtual drive emulator that works properly on 7!

Do you have any legit games with secure rom on them. Since it installs itself deep in the system I'm curious if it will work at all with W7.

All games installed on my 7 ATM were torrented... I'm not sure if I have SecuROM installed. But why does installing deep within the system prevent it from installing on 7? And in any case, anyone know any virtual drive software that does work with it?

My guess? The path in which SecuROM would have been installed in under XP/Vista would change in 7, so a new version of SecuROM with the path for where to install it in 7 would have to be created.

It isn't just where it is installed, it is HOW it is installed. SecuROM is very much like a virus.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecuROMhttp://reclaimyourga...o...6&Itemid=61

SecuRom is just as bad as GameGuard, X-Trap, and HackShield. While SecuRom is pretty much akin to a virus, GG/XT/HS install themselves in the system as rootkits.
