I think that the Links in all the games, just like the Zeldas, are decendants from one 'original' Link. All of the princesses in the Hyrule royal family are named Zelda because of an event that happened in the royal house-hold thousands of years ago, so they're not always the same princess. As for the main character, Link, Nintendo always gave players the option of naming him whatever they wanted in the game, but always used the term 'Link' to refer to that main character of all the Zelda games, so they're not the same person in all the games either.

They cant be the same guy... I mean... not just they change, the whole world around them does. Im not sure they are reincarnations either, perhaps they are just different heroes bound together by a common mission

Now, so far, all we know is that they're ALL Link, and MOSTLY Princess Zelda whether she's named Princess Zelda or not.(The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass) The reason I say mostly is... Well, OoT and/or OoS. =\ Now, for one moment, just think... If that's so, and with the whole theory of one single timeline, and another of multiple timelines created due to Link saving Hyrule at both 10 and 17 (Ocarina of Time), as well as the theory that every time Link set time back in Termina (Majora's Mask), that several multiple timelines were created due to such messing about with the very fabric of time...Now, imagine alternate universes, all at different timelines, existing all at the same time, BESIDE EACHOTHER. This is certainly a plausable theory, because if every different alternate universe was at a different point in time, it is possible that there are several different Links, separated by some difference, small or big, in the different universes at different times. This creates the possibility that while all the Links are the same, they could all be very well different, while at the same time being both the "Original" Link, as well as "Knock-Off" Links and "Reincarnated" Links. With this in mind, they're all the same person, just different, as well as descendants and ascendants(Don't ask me how I got that word.), too.EDIT: Just removed my previous edit due to off-topic and general idiocity.

link in the wind waker is actually not link that shows up in all of the other zelda's....wind waker takes place thousands of years after ocarina of time, all boys of age have to wear that outfit in memory of the original link...but it just so happens that the boy wind waker is based on happens to run into this big adventure and once again has to stop gannon

I never saw so much nonsense together before...Why, Link is Link, Zelda is Zelda, and I am me. No such things as reincarnations and stuff.Shigeru Miyamoto (the creator of the game) just was lazy and don't wanted to create a link between the games, that's all. :s

There is a slight connection in the games.Link Rescues Zelda from Ganon, Zelda fell a sleep and Link woke her up, Travels on Kohonit and defeats the nightmare, goes to holodrum and Labryna and beat Ganon again. i say that from here he dies and reincarnates into the OOT, seal Ganon and went on a vacation, killed Majora mask and leaves, then four swords adventures and beat Ganon again, reincarnate and beat Ganon again in Wind Waker. You cant really make out a 100% time line but at least i tried.

I've been studying the timeline too some years ago. Then I suddenly stumbled upon a site about this thing. And that link posted by somebody in this thread shows a good take on it. It's also kinda nice to see all those "oddities" if you play those games and pay careful attention. Those Sage names in OoT are the same names as those towns in Zelda II for instance. So you can predict and speculate here and there.

WRONG.This wouldn't make sense, and Nintendo have stated this isn't the case. There are many different Links, but not every game has a new Link. A definite example is OoT>MM. Same Link. The rest has been subject to much speculation and there's no definite timeline. See some Zelda fansites for some detailed interpretations. Trying to comprehend Zelda continuity is like trying to beat the running man in OoT.

Link is probably just a popular name like John or Michael. In this world, they prefer to name their sons Link cause its a quality name that has moxy among other qualities. So to answer the question, they are all different but come from the same socio-economic background, hence the similar clothes.

The Link you're talking about was the OoT one he's the one that appears in some zelda games (OoT, Majora's mask, oracle of seasons, and oracle of ages), that link is a descendant of the nes one, and the Snes one was ancestor of the nes one, the wind waker one was simply another descendant of the link bloodline (Really its sorta weird to see the link from the first and second game (which was the same one) suddenly turn from 16 to 10 again). I think I remember hearing about an official statement from nintendo that all of thet happens in the same universe and that the snes game (link to the past) was before the first legend of zelda. In a previous post its said dat link is the same but in different worlds and times its actually a special bloodline.

The timeline is a complex issue that is widely debated in the fandom. However, it is known that there is more than one Link.
