What are some good games that would fall into this category? I've already played every Metroid and Castlevania so don't bother recommending those
Metroidvania.

The only one I can think of is Aquaria. It's a underwater Metroidvania style game for Mac and PC released by Ambrosia (the same guys who made the Escape Velocity series). It's fun, with a lot of exploration, beautiful environments and music. The story takes itself a bit too seriously at times, but other than that, it's one of the best games I've played recently.Oh, and Cave Story.

ActRaiser...kind of. There are bits where you are in a platforming level, killing baddies Simon-style and after that you have to build cities, a la SimCity. It's a great game to play if you're looking for some variety in gameplay

Shadow Complex, a game comming soon exclusively to the Xbox 360 marketplace, falls under that category.
