i prefer the gba but overall the gba sp is better in terms of backlight capability but for me the buttoms where better on the gba than the gba sp.
Which version of the GBA is the best?

it seems that, for the most part, that the SP would be the better choice. and why? the backlight for the most obvious reason. there are however, slight drawbacks when compared to the original GBA. they are both backwards compatible. SP needed to be charged. that's a good and bad thing. for one, you didn't need to worry about batteries. but if you were on the go and the SP died, you were out of luck. if it ran on batteries, you can easily carry 2 spare batteries and you're playing again. secondly, with rechargeable batteries, the rechargeable function negates the SP charging ability making it's ability moot. next is the size. the GBA has a better grip than the SP because of it's wideness. it's easier to hold than the SP where it almost feels like you're holding your own hand. but in the end, people can easily deal with that and can just adjust to it or not play as long especially when you're able to play it in the dark because of the backlight. so the SP becomes the better version solely for the backlight despite the uncomfortable size

I'd go SP. The backlight and rechargable battery were great additions and made it such a great quality system. I also love how it folded shut so my screen stayed protected. When I sold my old DS and bought a Lite I went back to playing my GBA games on my SP because I hated the way they stuck out of the slot.
