i was reading my game informer tonight and article in has lines from thoughts from the past issues. and one is by kideo kojima saying that he believes that games are not art and well never be art. i what to hear your comments and see your thoughts on the matter!. plus also say what games should be considered artwork! i say most of the Mario games as how far the plumber has gone and changed the gaming worlds (thought this was the best place to place one of it sorry if not)

I think while games can certainly have some art elements to them (I loved the visuals in Mass Effect and Oblivion, simply beautiful! Also, the storyline in Mass Effect was very good) they should not be judged solely on artistic value. Games are created for the reason of gaming, and while a developer can focus on the visuals and make the game as aesthetically pleasing as possible (the same goes for storyline, although to a lesser degree), if they don't spend as much time on the gameplay it will fail. I personally believe that video games should never be judged as art--unless there is a game developed called "Art Hero." Then you could judge that game's content as art. <_<

Games contain several forms of art which are then artistically combined. Within games there is visual, auditory, and narrative art. In some games these elements are lackluster, in some there integration is lackluster, but they certainly have the potential of art

Games ARE art. They require the penmanship of a skilled writer, the flair of a skilled artist, and the codewrangling of a skilled programmer. Or rather teams of them. If a collection of different arts doesn't count as a form of art, then I don't know what does. A true "work of art" game (ie: Xenogears, FF7, nuff said) combines all elements in an enthralling and addictive package, just the same way as a painting might capture your attention or a good book will have you hooked and rereading it just to drink it all in.

games should be consider art. Peopel who create them don't just do it out of the blue ... it is given time, sweat, and dedication so that the masses will like it. from the concepualisation to the actual creation of the game.

yes it should, it takes imagination and creativity for every game, just like in art.

Im a little torn on this one. First and formost games are ment to entertain and amuse you. While that is not always what art is trying to do most have an entertainment value anyway. On the other hand its just a game. Its a mindless diverson to help you get through the day, be it killing tons of dudes, building towns, or exploreing space. Its just a game. People take them to seriously, I think we need to step back and enjoy the game for what it is be it art or not.

I would consider it art in some ways.. I mean it's an art to be able to entertain millions of people right? And the game art has become more vivid over the past years.

It should be considered art. You use imagination to picture scenes in games like scenes of paintings. You use creativeness to create characters in computer-graphic form like drawings of creatures. And you use colour! It is a difficult skill to even make animation with computers!

Anything that is an expression of human creativity is art. Movies are art. Books are art. Games are art.

I would say that things like the story, music and visuals can be considered art. On the other hand, I wouldn't consider the actual gameplay of a game art, I'd say that it is more science.

Books of adventures are art, breathtaking paintings are art, epic music is art...Aren't games a combination of these things? If so, I'd say games ARE art!

Okay... so first of... I really think this topic should be in the DEBATES section... but that's up to the mods to move or not.Anyways, here I go...

First and formost games are ment to entertain and amuse you. While that is not always what art is trying to do most have an entertainment value anyway.

I do agree that games are meant to entertain and amuse us. I also agree that art is not always made for this purpose, it CAN be made for this purpose... it really depends on the artist as to what purpose their art is made.

On the other hand its just a game. Its a mindless diverson to help you get through the day, be it killing tons of dudes, building towns, or exploreing space. Its just a game.

This, I can both agree on and disagree on. Yes, Tetris is just a game... a game that, sure, is a mindless diversion to help you get through the day or to kill time in general. But, as someone else said earlier, someone had to have written a code to CREATE games such as these. Being able to create anything with your mind is a great accomplishment. I have gone through computer coding classes and have experienced the difficulties in coding simple games... my creation, my masterpiece, my artwork. Coding is a program is considered in part DESIGNING it as well.. which I believe to be art. Games that contain story lines and/or any graphics involved are drastically different from Tetris and may be considered to more people as artwork. The reason I say "and/or" is because games with only storylines, such as those old RPG games you can get for your TI-83 graphing calculator (if anyone knows what I'm talking about), needs to have had an author who also CREATED the story line as well as programmed the game.... therefore, artwork again. And yes newer games we all know and love, Zelda games, Final Fantasy games, etc. are indeed artwork. I do believe that numerous artists work on these games and collaborate to pull the game together. There are Authors for storylines, Graphic designers for the images you see, Pragrammers to make it readable on your console, as well as Producers who pull it all together. I'm sure there are a lot more other titles for artists I'm just not thinking of at the moment... but just look at the credits at the end of your game (or at the beginning) and know that they have created their own form of art.OH MY GOODNESS!! I can't believe I forgot to mention music! for sure someone had to have created original music! or else we would have to listen to the same stuff over and over again. Sound effects too... someone has to do those voice-overs in the games to make them sound more realistic.Yes, books are art (authors), paintings, drawings, etc. is art (artists/designers), computer programs are art (programmers), movies are art (producers and talents/actors), and music is art (composers).

Yes, games should be considered art. The way I see art is a way of expressing yourself, and games are also a way of expressing yourself.
