I remember going to the Royal Society Summer Exhibition this year. They had a stand about algae for biofuels. Unfortunately, they had a battery consisting of about eight trays of algae powering a single digital clock. There's still some scaling up issues regarding biofuels. In NewScientist recently, however, they were talking about the Evolution of life. Some scientists were saying that science had got it all wrong, that the earliest precursors to all living species did not absorb mitochondria but rather special mitochondria. These organisms broke food down into carbon dioxide and hydrogen. So, not mitochondria but hydrogenosomes. Biology was generating hydrogen long before we decided to electrolyse water. Think of it. These little things could produce all the hydrogen we need for hydrogen fuel cells and they'll do it by digesting waste matter (may need genetic modification). At least, that's what I thought. The article only discusses these hydrogenosome-sporting organisms in the context of evolutionary history. But I was thinking biofuels!

I once saw a TV special about a guy who powered his house off solar (which works well because its free after you install the panels) and stored his daily excess electricity by splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen was then used to power his car as well as kept in storage for days when the sun wasn't shining.

Apparently rechargeable batteries for cars will be big to minimise full efficiency and cars will be run by computers in the automotive industry

Hmm i think the wind and solar energy will be used used most of the time in the near future, because there is always wind and sun!I even think that the technique is already capable of full use of wind and solar energy, but the consequences for the economy to stop using oil at this time will be humendous! think of the middle-east, russia and the USA.. all will lose a big income.. and the world economy will collapse.. But when there is no more oil they have to look for a solution.. and i think they will find it in the wind and sun (possible the water too)...

solar if it becomes cheap and more efficient. (it needs to use all light wave lengths not just red) otherwise nuclear and fission independent or working together has the most possibility.

Solar energy will become first choice, because its abundant and free of pollutant.

No energy source is perfect its best to use a combination of renewable energy for maximum effect but minimum damage to the environment.

WATER!!!! SUN!!!!! i can't wait for a legalized solar-powered home being used by everyone no more electric companies lol just pure sunlight, solar panels all converted to electricity ^___^ and for fuel....WATER!!!!! can't wait for future geniuses to tweak water as an energy source gasoline will go extinct! lol

I think it's less a problem to find the energy source at the moment. I think the most important task we face now is to make existing power-generating technologies better, namely improve on four things:First, power conservation and maximising throughput. A solar cell only transforms a small fraction of the sun's energy into electricity. Technologies that aren't energy-wasters should be developed.Second, acceleration of fuel-regeneration. A part of the power (ideally solar) should be used to accelerate the formation of fossil fuels while, at the same time, reducing atmospheric pollution levels. (Motto: let's stick the CO2 back where it came from)Third, wireless leakless high-power transfer. This is THE technology which will revolutionise the energy-scene. Electromagnetic waves provide an efficient way to channel low-power through vacuum and several media, but a similar way to safely transfer high-power is as yet unknown. Research in ongoing.Fourth, global-level and cosmic-level energetic engeneering. The Earth gets more energy each day than we would need, even in the most power-hungry scenarioes. Making a global grid and using the entire Earth to establish a uniform energy policy is 1000 times more invaluable than alternative fuels, which seem to be less and less of a saviour-solution to our problems.Hopefully the energy-policy makers will be capable of lateral thinking in the near future...

Something infinite would definitely be the best source of energy, unfortunately I have no intellect so I would have to choose water or wind or solar energy.
