I recently bought the game, but haven't yet purchased the DLC with the Grey Warden's Base or whatever it's called. I plan on waiting until Return to Ostagar comes out to buy both of those, and I'm wondering if I should continue down this path.

I think the DLC is worth it, but I really like the game. If you only think it's so-so, don't go for it.

Considering you can now get the ultimate edition that comes with Awakening and every piece of DLC for only 60 dollars I'd say it's worth it.I mean each DLC was like 5 dollars or more, the base game was 60 and Awakening was 40. I still think Awakening is 40 if you buy it separate.

It really depends on the DLC you're looking at. Certain ones like the Grey Warden's Keep and stuff aren't really needed in my opinion, neither are extra campaigns like Leliana's Song, but there are other DLC's that are a great addition. Awakening is a must have for the full experience, and things like Witch Hunt, and Stone Prisoner are also really good expansions on the story. It's completely up to you if you feel like spending the money, though. Seeing as none of the DLC are really required for anything, they're just little add-ons to increase the gameplay experience.

i loved the game, and only got the free DLC, and i rented awakening for 5 days, but i finished it in 2 days...but, if you wish to save money buy the ultimate editionIt comes with:

  • Dragon Age Origins- Awakening Expansion Pack - The story of the Grey Wardens continues as you are named their commander. Fight new enemies, learn new skills and spells, and explore an all-new area of the world, Amarantine.
  • All Nine Content Packs - Extend your adventure with The Stone Prisoner, Warden's Keep, Return to Ostagar, Feast day Gifts, The Darkspawn Chronicles, Feast day Pranks, Leliana's Song, The Golems of Amgarrak, and Witch Hunt

you could buy it pre owned here:http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-Dragon+Age+Origins+Ultimate+Editionfor about $17.99 for xbox 360 and ps3, but for pc, you have to get it new and its $29.99the dlc is worth it, but the sad thing is that you have to start up a new game every time you download a new DLC, otherwise it will not let you use it in that save.so the complete pack is worth buying.

How does the game compare to the Baldur's Gate series? Since I kept hearing it talked up as a "spiritual sequel," and was wondering if it manages to fill those rather large shoes.

The game has been out for so long already. There will definitely be cheap options to buy the game and all DLC. Or you can just hope for a sale on either Steam or Origin.
