The Pandorica was a prison designed to hold the Doctor. As such when it first opened it contained only a chair and lots of technology to trap the Doctor. When it opened the second time it contained Amy Pond who the Doctor put in there to save her life.

The Doctor was trapped in the PandoricaRiver Song was trapped in an exploding TardisRory and Amy were on the surface of Earth with Rory (revealed to be an Auton created from Amy's memory) having just shot Amy with the gun built into his hand.Stephen Moffatt does like a good cliffhanger, but three at once was more than I could cope with.
