I had this in IT class . They were discussing the demerits and downsides of computers and this popped up.Computers are not able to think for themselves. Now is that necessarily a bad thing? What do you think?

i guess this a good thing because if they did thinking, they might not do what you want them to do

They don't think... They just make decisions of "yes or no" functions :3

I guess it's a good thing? So that your computer doesnt feel angry one day and delete everything?

I agree, But the programs seem to be getting more intelligent. The increasing convenience of all things involved with a computer makes me happy and admire the work of the people who wrote the code

It is a VERY good thing that computers do not have their own intelligence. If that were to come true in the near future, and that computer had internet access that gives it the ability to be the worlds best hacker...... but without any moral and ethical values associated with said computer it would possibly hack the entire government network that it was intended to protect but not properly programmed to protect. If it the further off future we can produce full working AI such as Dr. Haisley made with Cortana in the Halo universe that are limited by commands from the owner and have their own values that can be constantly maintained, then it would be a relatively great thing, but would reduce the need for humans to exist and eventually you would have these AI running the planet without human maintenance. Without the human maintenance these AI, like all other software, will become corrupted and fail to work resulting in a form of end of the world scenario in which other animals are all that may or may not still thrive.

Well, it depends because if computers were able to think freely, then they'd have their own personalities depending on the computer's experience. It's like having a child, I think the computer would take on what the creator wanted for it and then learn new things from whoever buys them. IN short, if computers were able to think, YOU'D BE MAKING THEM HUMAN. Free will, thought, curiosity, knowledge, wisdom, beliefs, cultre everything we ever had all to ourselves, they would have too. It's like creating a whole new race, except they would reproduce through us making more of them, so they'd be dependent on our survival, least til they figure out how to make more of each other. And then, on a more complex level, they'd have their own actions, personalities, chain of thought, S.O.P., etc. There would be good computers and bad computers, like us humans. Computers not being able to think freely is what makes them... well, usable. Because if they were actually able to think freely as we do, I don't think they'd let us use them the same way we are using them now.@oblivionplayer1: They may or they may not do such. I mean, we humans are free thinkers and we don't get along. If computers were free thinkers too, I don't think they'd all get along. They'd have conflict of ideas and maybe who knows. If such a scenario happens, there may be computers on OUR side as well as Humans on THEIR side. The thought of thought is hard to think about and predict. It all depends on Personality, Experience, Psychology and many more various things.IN SIMPLE TERMS, If computers could think freely, NO ONE CAN SAY WHAT WOULD HAPPEN but what is for sure is that they would be like HUMANS.

Technically, computers CAN think. What do you think the brain is? It's an organic supercomputer. Why would a sentient piece of machinery be any different? After all, we in a sense have been 'programmed' via genetics.

Computers are made to compute=/= think. The brain can be considered to be a computer and all but there is something more that does the thinking. We have all been programmed via genetics? I prefer to think that all our experiences are interpreted by our character style and used to adapt our personality/decision for the better. That is what thinking is. You really can't add 1 and 1 without knowing what 1 is so its a slow process where we go in to learn and improve our internal firmware and its capabilities. And you totally didn't answer the simple part of the question. :D

It's only a matter of time till a decent AI is made for computers to think for themselves

AI- Artificial intelligence, We give them orders per situationThinking for themselves- RI- Real intelligence. Its not really the same thing, Sure the AI can make them really useful things to have and they'll probably be pretty versatile in their abilities but they still can't solve new problems and be creative. There always needs to be some input for the AI to choose the right decisions and it will always make the same moves, With real thinking that will not be the case, But for humans to create that kind of intelligence in a non living machine seems impossible to me, AI can be great but its not the same thing

For the more S&M people, this might be a turn on. <3On the other hand it's pretty awful when a computer doesn't think. Especially when the user in question can't think either.

all this reminds me of Mass Effect2. you should play it and then get legion and see what you think about computers having their own intelligence when you're done.they think, therefore they are...yada yada. if you have intelligence enough to think and consider options and outcomes and such, then you're alive. and if you're alive then you have conscience and a soul. so where's the limit? can they be punished? should they be punished? what's suitable for a computer as punishment? should 'pain' be involved, memory erasing?

it's a good thing that computers can't think for themselves. i know movies like the terminator and irobot have become cliches in our modern society, but there is an ounce of truth in those stories. artificial intelligence would be a curse (that is, the kind of artificial intelligence that allows the development of free will, not the so-called a.i that results from pattern analysis and such that google is capable of). the reason humans have so many problems is cuz we cannot completely control the free will of others. beings of free will and thought can decide to do something for themselves, which is almost always made in the pursuit of self-interest. the clash of self-interests and opposing opinions are what cause problems in the world. think how bad things would get if computers and machines, which are superior to humans in almost every way, have their own self-interests in mind.

I believe it would be quite dangerous if we were to develop any A.I. that could become self-aware. Especially machines with such traits in large numbers. Not that I would expect to see it in my lifetime, but it would be nightmarish if there was a war between humans and machines.

It is only bad if the become all terminator like but if you have played the Megaman series where they are in a PET or something than it could actually be very cool and useful if they could think since you could tell them waht to fix exactly.

The main problem with machines thinking is that we believe they will wonder as we do, what the point of my existence is? They will wonder why they must serve us if we made them to serve us. There is a branch of bad consequences that I honestly can see in my head but cannot describe because of this.I will say that the Three Laws of Robotics* means nothing when we introduce thinking intelligence to them.*-1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

If computers were able to think, then they would be able to do far greater actions than they currently can. At the moment, they seem to be limited by the inability to think due to a lack of creativity. WIth such creativity, these "things" of artificial intelligence would be able to advance the world's technology. Knowledge would be a very powerful tool in a computer that has an infinite capacity of memory. The flipside would be a robot invasion in which the human would suddenly become the servant...

bad b/c our lazy asses would prob end up like this if computers could end up being advanced enough to do most of the jobs humans do todayPosted ImageI get pissed when i use search engines and they ask me did I mean "lesbian hitchhiker" how could I handle the computer being able to mock me in some deadpan voice. What if the computers ended up making movies like terminator and matrix come true? Honestly why would a "perfect" logical being really obey things so flawed as humans <3 we would be so screwed! But yeah computers being able to think more than they can now would be a bad thing....very bad. You hear that technology I dont trust you! I use you!!

If computers cannot think for themselves, that provides a limit to advancing technology. A dead end. We'll soon realize that we can't do anything special without a computer thinking for itself and we'll make it happen. But you know one feature I've been seriously waiting for that requires some AI? Voice-recognition. I want it to replace the keyboard and control my computer from a distance.
