Rotting your brain cells is sort of...the opposite of a euphemysm...it is true that excessive gaming is bad for your health, mainly it lowers your eyesight and affects your brain performance (lack of sleep, lack of attention..yadda yadda). But if you control yourself and the time you play games, there wont be any problem, in fact, games are great ways of learning stuff.:br:

The older generations just don't know what its like because they didn't have any :br: .So its natural that some people started saying it and it became a general rule. But its rather dumb because many games require good skill and coordination and make your hand movements precise. Then there are games full of puzzles which keep you thinking of a way to solve it.And then there are the few stupid games which i can't think of any examples.Overall games are good.

The only ones that I can truly say do not harm my mental and/or physical health in anyway are...Sudoku and WiiFit. All the other games give me carpal tunnel, worsen my myopia and lead me to make unhealthy lifestyle choices like Corn Puffs for breakfast...

Video games, in terms of what they do for education, are no different than any other entertainment media. This has pretty much been acknowledged as fact by psychologists - the idea of it being a "deeper immersion" and thus desensitizing you to violence more than watching it on TV, for example, is utter bupkiss. Television and even books (of the fun-read variety) are prone to this as well.Certain types of game - video and otherwise - will teach certain skills - some being useless outside of that game or outside of games in general, others being VERY useful. Collectible card games, for example, teach applied mathematics (both in the obvious "X life minus Y damage equals Z remaining", and in the analytical "how to get the best deck" sense). Many games with daily action limits, such as Kingdom of Loathing, teach applied economics - that is, the optimal use of a limited resource.Others are less useful - Grand Theft Auto's skillset, outside of game-general hand-eye coordination, would be useful to few individuals in this world. Such is the nature of the game, though, and really it is no different from a film in that element.

To much of anything is bad for you! I think that some aspects of this debate are blown up way too much but I wouldn't let my 6yr old play GTA or COD because its adult games, adult themes.

heeeeeyyyy im kinda older generation, well nearly 30, so dont have my parents telling me what to do any more (thank goodness lol)I have played games consoles my entire life and still have plenty of brain cells, my IQ has stayed the same....plus its now great because I have a daughter myself and we play games together :)Would not allow her to sit in front of TV, PC or an console for entire days at a time, but again, hasnt done me any harm. Some of the games on the NDS for young children are pretty educational too, so I am happy for her to play them

Large companies want us to believe it so we go back to watching TV and see their commercials so people buy their products and they make more money. Also there is some truth to it so they use that truth and exaggerate it.

Old people don't seem to know what Sudoku is then. EEH? EEH? Anyone? HIGH FIVE. The fact that there's actually a term for 'educational games' shows that it's decent in healthy doses. I wonder how much people out there say video games are bad and also smoke?

Games are great if you don't let them dominate your life. They help people in lots of ways intellectually. Though I don't know what all these ways are, but I assure you they do!

I think that there is a good and bad side to excessive game playing. For the most part it has no real affect on you in a bad sense unless you just play constantly all the time day and night. On the good side you get better hand and eye coordination. Some games teach you lessons and others train you through the use of puzzles and such. You still have to be intelligent to beat some games. You can't just press a few buttons and boom you are done like adults might think, which is why they assume it turns your brain to mush. Like some have said older generations haven't had the luxury of having something to do like this.

I believe games teach us things. games like harvest moon can teach responsiblity. on the other hand games like grand theft auto show us how not to steal a car or elts a bunch of gang members hunt u down lol. but seriously i believe most games do more help than harm.

I don't think games are that bad for you if you play them in controlled amounts. Parents seem to overreact to playing video games because its different from what they had in their generation and they don't view it as a "normal" hobby or activity because they never really experienced them.

Well, anything is harmful if you do it too much. But just played normally? They can sharpen your concentration and memorization skills, reflexes, problem solving skills, and in some cases (although certainly not all) they've IMPROVED certain people's eyesight. (I'm sadly not one of them.) There's no "brain cell rotting" going on.... People used to say the same thing about television too. (Although, you probably have a better chance of that one being true than gaming...)

How can games "rot your brain cells"? While playing games your brain is working alot still. Really playing games is no diffrent then reading a book!It can damage your eyes, i guess and other things by playing badly!I think the people who make these statistics up are just jealous because they suck at gaming! :awesome:

I see a lot here, that I agree with and around the same that I disagree with. It's not your liking/habit you need to control, but your use of it. MOST games tend to teach one thing or another - risk analysis, applied economics, basic math, strategy, multiple step thinking/ even hand-eye co-ordination. Sometimes, they even contain informational content. But, it's not the content itself which makes a game a good or bad habit, but the gamer's use of it. If you have epilepsy, myopia.etc games(video games, atleast) are never gonna be good for you. Yet, they can help people destress and learn interesting(if random) things. It's when you begin to become abusive of your obsession, by spending hours at it, getting overly stressed and losing a sense of priorities, that the game becomes bad for you. It's kinda up to you.
