Is anybody else sick and tired of turn-based combat systems? I've just been going through my RPGs and I realised something. The ones I don't replay are the ones that have turn-based combat. The ones that have somewhat interactive turn-based combat are a bit more fun, but...Why on Earth do Japanese companies insist on creating RPGs with turn-based combat anymore? It's dull. It's repetitive. Are they trying to showcase music? If so, make some decent music for the battles! It's a sad state of affairs, when the only decent single-player RPGs tend to be from Japan. Okay, so maybe Fable counts and that's pretty decent, I suppose. Anyway, what are you thoughts on the matter?

Valkyria Chronicles (2) for the PSP (I just started playing it since i saw many others playing) has a turn based system too, But its pretty awesome when you look at it.You get to move your soldiers and choose what to do, There still is a limit to how much you can move or attack in a turn but that's what makes it interesting, Since this is something new to me i find it fun.Other than for that, Yes, I am sick of turn based RPGs. I haven't even gotten through one without getting angry at the turn based system.

Active combat is what it's all about. I want the next Final Fantasy game to have a fully real-time, 3D fighting system like the Tekken engine.

It really does depend on what game! I started playing AOE - age of kings for my DS, it has turn based combat but it works well. It only works well because turn based combat in this game adds to the stratagy of it. I really enjoy the game and i play it alot. I guess in some games it gets a little boring...

I dont mind turn based combat. Infact I think quite a few RPGs are better off with a turn based system. What tends to piss me off are random battles. I want to be able to pick my battles, not be thrown into one randomly while exploring a complex, maze-like dungeon.

Honestly I've always preferred turn-based to real-time combat. Games like KOTOR and things like that get very hectic in fights, and I end up with the game paused every other half-second anyway, so I don't understand the point of doing real-time combat with pausability. Without pausability, complex fights are harder to do just from the sheer number of actions you need to cram in.

I think that turn based rpgs can still have replay value it just depends on the style of turn based system, for example legend of dragoon is a turn based system but used a unique attack system to make the game more interesting, the same can also be said of legend of legaia.

ehh it does get annoying when the game is generally uninteresting. but it works well for others like persona and legend of legaia. Legaia had teh best turned based system ever!!!

I think real time and turn based both have their advantages over one another. In my opinion turn based is often slower and more strategical kind of game play, and Real time offers a faster paced type of feel and what i think requires more skill.

I really enjoy turn based combat, well I like any type of game so... Anyway, it all depends on what game I am playing, I like turn based because it helps to develop a strategy system, and random battles are good because you can level up just by walking around (usually turn based combat games are RPGs). I will agree with you about the music, it is fairly repeditive and gets boring quickly.A problem a lot of people have with Turn based games (ie. Pokemon) is they just want action and attack, attack, attack, they don't try to come up with a more effective strategy to weaken and alter the stats of their opponent, while boosting their own, allowing them to not get hurt and win, making for a better fight
