I can take a Japanese course next semester but I am not looking forward to doing so. While I am very interested in learning the language, it requires a great deal of work and involvement but at the same time even that cannot guarantee an A in the course. My brother failed out of Japanese but I don't think he put very much effort into it. So I'm asking you guys, especially those who have experience, are there any tools or resources that help in learning a new language? Anyone have any experience in taking/learning Japanese? Any general advice in learning a new language or taking foreign language in college? Thanks.

Have you ever thought about the 'My 'Language' Coach games? Im using this game to learn Chinese and i know there is a Japanese version. Could give you a head start on the course, if its the correct dialect. You could also dign up to a Language Exchange website and actually talk with people from that country to learn like that. I do this also :foldarms:

Yeah, I've looked into LiveMocha, unsure if there are any other good ones. I dunno, I still feel overwhelmed. Obviously I'm not going to learn the entire language in one night, but maybe that's what bugs me. And the writing is UGHH. Don't even know where to start.

Asian writing + learning is a pain... I have this issue also, i have an english keyboard so i cant type to my LE partners very easy in Chinese, but i have been looking at some keyboard emulators. As for feeling overwhelmed... A language is a pretty big thing to learn, you need a degree of dedication to do it. I feel it also and i learn from like 3 places. If you want to do it, give it a try and see if its for you.I wish you luck.

I actually started playing this game: http://www.dgemu.com...etails-737.html . It's a huge help in the writing department and in reading the Japanese characters. I'll keep at this for a few weeks and hopefully I'll be ahead for when next semester starts. Not really sure what a good utility is for Chinese though.

Man, learning Japanese would be awesome. Wish I could do that. Can't afford the courses, though.

Well, as I am learning Japanese myself, on my own time instead of courses however. I recommend Smart.fm to help you study, review, and even learn your Japanese. It is really a nice site too, other language things than Japanese but Japanese seems to be one of the primary study programs on the site.Oh, also, don't give up. Keep at it everyday, no matter the circumstance, or it will just be wasted time that you used on it.

I was actually born in Japan and Japanese was my first language. I learned English when I was about 12.With that said, even though this may not be an option for you, try to immerse yourself in the language. Taking a trip to Japan is ideal. Your brain does a much better job picking up the language when you are completely surrounded by it. If you can't, do your best to find some Japanese friends and speak as much Japanese as you can with them. Also think in your mind in Japanese. What a lot of people do is translate the language they're studying in to their native language in their mind. If you're thinking AND speaking in Japanese, the process is going to go a lot faster for you. Hope this helps, good luck in your studies.

If it's something that interests you, pursue it. However, keep in mind that it's like a video game; you might like it, but it can still provide a challenge.

Watching anime/Japanese movies and listening to Japanese music (image songs in particular, since they're usually sung quite clearly) helps a lot with pronunciation, especially if you sing along. I couldn't make that flippy "r" sound until I started singing along to my favorite songs, and then I figured it out.

I am teaching myself the Japanese Language. It is by far the hardest language out there I have been told, also I like challenges. I can't take any actual Japanese classes until after I obtain my G.E.D after that I'm ready to face other classes like Architecture, Photography, Japanese, Drawing, C.A.D, Computers inside and out, an a whole bunch more classes! HA HA I love to study... can you tell?

I am taking japanese right now in high school. Let me tell you that "Kanji" is probably the worst part in learning the language because there are literally thousands of them. It's like going back to grade 1 because all the material that you learn is what little kids in japan would learn lol.

I wish they had a Japanese language course available at my school. Instead, they have Japanese dulture class and one on Japanese poetry (Haiku, Senryuu, Tanka). It'd be nice if I could learn how to speak it. It's a beautiful language!
