Well, got my R4DS in the mail yesterday. Loaded the most recent kernel from the link at the beginning of this post(v1.18), added my games and all but one game has worked so far. ^_^ This guide was very helpful in making that happen. Now comes a few questions. During my research on the R4DS, I found out the R4DS is apparently no longer being supported, or produced. Unfortunately I found this out after I had already made the purchase and it was shipped out. The "upgraded" R4DS-III is being produced however from a different company (to support SDHC). I have found kernels going up to v 1.25 (December 10, 2008 release) for the R4DS-III.Since I don't want to wreck my new R4DS, I am going to ask you very knowledgeable folks. Here's my questions. Can I use the v1.25 kernel with the "real" R4DS? If I can, will it fix issues with newer games? If not, should I just try the ARM7.bin fix? and if that doesn't work, just forget the game?Any info would be appreciated. I'm just trying to gain knowledge on the subject so I don't make a huge mistake and fry something.

Im guessing that the newer kernel will not work with the original "R4DS"IF it does work it should fix compatibilityARM7.bin fix is normally for roms that display the "could not create save data error" or a similar message.

Thank you for your response. So far every game we have tried (except Age of Empires: Mythologies) has worked fine with v1.18 kernel. Since there are so many games out there I'm sure we'll eventually run into others. I tried the ARM7.bin fix on AOE, but wasn't able to get it up and running. Since the cards were for xmas presents, and I was short on time, I wasn't able to get in too deep for a fix. I'll be double checking my attempt at fixing AOE, it was one of the games I really wanted to try, and by the looks of it, many people have been able to successfully play the game.On a side note, I have had at least two of my kids tell me that the R4DS card was their favorite present this year!

I have been using a supercard mini for a couple of years and have now purchased a R4DS. How can I convert the game SAV files I generated when using the supercard mini to work on the R4DS? I have tried using the www.shuneyweb.inf/convert.php but it does not work?

I recently got an R4 and four days upon purchase, it got screwed. When I turned my DS on the screen read,"Cannot read SD/TF Card". I was informed that this may have happened because a slight (accidental) bump separated the R4's curcuits with the MicroSD's for a split second while the DS was on, causing the directory files to get erased. This is the most possible scenario, as I don't believe in abusing or tormenting my beloved games. My question is, how do I fix this? I know that all I have to do is format the SD card, but if I do, all my .NDS and .SAV files will be erased. (I don't need to worry about the directory files because I can just download them from the official R4 site.) I tried using Pandora Recovery, a file recovery program, but it couldn't even read the flash drive. I know of a software called Smart Flash Recovery, but according to the users of CNet, it isn't very good. Does anyone have suggestions?

Try using Stellar Phoenix. The trial will at least tell you if it's recoverable, and if so, there's ways to get around the trial limitations. I find it to be good software, so hopefully it'll help you.

I downloaded the Stellar Phoenix demo software as you suggested, and you were right to say that it is good software. It uncovered all the root files of my flash drive. But unfortunately, I couldn't find the .NDS or .SAV files, and if I did, I couldn't save them anyways. So I decided to just go ahead and format the darned MicroSD. I can just play the games over again and use the cheats. But thank you very much for your assistance, I really appreciate that someone at least acknowledged my inquiry, a forum guard, no less.

Well, I service computers as a hobby and I've used the software myself. I wish you could have at least recovered the .sav files, but recovery software isn't always a guarantee. Best thing to do is to backup.

Yeah, I learned my lesson. I actually had five of the seven games backed up, Phoenix Wright and Mario Hoops weren't backed up, though.

Which Phoenix Wright game? If you need a save file to get to a later case, I should have one handy.I don't have anything for Mario Hoops, because I hated that game.

Right now I'm playing Ace Attorney. I was on the third case, I think. And I hate Mario Hoops too, it's just that my brother insisted on getting it.

In the future, you might want to try Ontrack's Easy Recovery software, they have a trial as well. I say this because my daughter came to me today with a similar problem. She was playing and decided to turn the game off, I think after she saved. When she turned it back on to play a different game, it came up with an error message: Couldn't find_DS_MENU.DATWhen I put the SD card in the reader and plugged it into the USB, there was NOTHING on the card. At least nothing that was showing.I was able to recover and restore the card to the state it was in before the problem, though my initial tests found a bad recovery on one of the NDS files and the game she turned off said it had a corrupt file that had to be deleted, but that could have been from turning the game off. The rest seems just fine.I'll find out for sure if everything was successful when she plays and tells me her files are there.

To play nes or gb/gbc games with your ds, please refer to this topic: [EMULATOR] Emulating other systems on the DS Nintendo 64 games however, can't be emulated because they use too much ram and you've got a problem with the c-buttons which you can only use it if it was possible with the touchscreen. To play gba roms on your ds you need an expansion pack in the 2nd slot like ezflash 3in1, if you do this you can also use 2nd slot features for DS games, like migrating pokémon from gba games to DPP.

I did some research, and here's what I found via the R4 Compatibility list:Source:
http://wiki.scorpei.com/index.php/R4_compatibility_list#2901-3000

Works fine BUT ONLY USING THIS SAVE FILE CREATED WITH R4 III (:D, a Clone has saved us :D). Download it from here. In addittion, you can restart from the begining without any problem.

Download Save file:
http://www.megaupload.com/es/?d=TOPVIGGM
This applies to both the U and E versions. Thanks for reminding me to post this.If you ever want to check compatibility with a game or get ideas on how to fix it, check out that compatibility list. It's very helpful.

Sorry, but there are no new updates for the R4, the company got a lawsuit from nintendo and stopped making new firmwares. You can however do some other things:1. Download the program "dslazy" (can be with a quick google search) and unpack the rom, do it with another rom too that you know that it works fine, copy the file that's called "arm7.bin" from the rom that works with your R4 and copy it to the hello kitty rom and pack it. This MAY work, but is not guaranteed to work.2. Try using YSMenu to run TTDS firmware on your R4, you can read the instructions here: http://gbatemp.net/i...showtopic=97615So keep your fingers crossed, and hope it works....

Well, the problem lies with your micro sd, the R4 isn't sdhc compatible, so it can't handle micro sd's larger then 2GB......

Did you download the firmware from the webpage link posted 'cause that doesn't work. I tried that myself and had the same problem. Anyways, your R4 should've come with a CD-ROM; just pop that into your computer and drag and drop the English firmware. Unzip it and move all the files to your micro SD. Hope this helps

The guide here is good and fair. I think, all things considered, the R4 is the best allrounder. Some of the other cards bust easily, the R4 is really well made and the firmware is updated regularly. My R4s have been really reliable - no problems at all!No need to quote unrelated 2 year old posts.
