So, of course I think it's pretty obvious that any school has a certain form of blocking sites that are meant for games, chatting and other multimedia. I'm personally not so into going online, chatting with others while in school. Not to forget that there isn't much time available...So I don't really mind it. I do however need certain sites for research, but cannot access since they are blocked. I do know way's to avoid the block but personally never uses it.Anyways, enough 'bout me. What's your experience with this situation?

My school doesn't block anything... I think. I've never used the internet there since I always have things to do in the limited time we get on the school PCs. Why not block all the multimedia/game sites? You can use the PC at home or go to an internet cafe to do that. School is for studying, so that's all it needs to do.Ofcourse, We'd get around the blocks if we wanted to

Itsounds stupid at first sight, but I think it is a good thing to prevent virus or private content that students shoudn't be seeing.

Luckily, my University does not. However, when I was in high school, the big websites like YouTube and Myspace (you know...when it was used by everyone) were blocked. You can imagine how unenthused I was. But it didn't matter that much to me at that time..

My school blocks all the usuals... Facebook, Bebo, Myspace, Youtube etc etc as well as some gaming sites. Most forums I go on aren't blocked because the school doesnt even know they exist. I really only use the school computers for work when I have to so the blocks dont bother me. But now our schools blocking the popular unblockers, its quite funny.

I usually let it be, unless I'm in a rush to see something online, haha.

My school blocks bebo, facebook, youtube, hotmail etc. They also wander by every now and then to make sure you're studying. They won't let you use the computers otherwise, it sucks

Although i do not like the idea of blocking websites it helps students stay on task for schoolwork.

As far as I know, there are easy ways to avoid being blocked. One way I used to use was proxies. Google is your friend :)

I think schools should censor information as there is too much bogus on the internet. And, going on Facebook, Twitter, etc distracts many students from real school work. As a student I didn't usually try to go around the blocks as they were lenient enough to allow many good and proper websites.

Personally,I think schools block certain websites for a reason, such as to keep the students from getting distracted with something completely unrelated to learning.I just let the whole thing be,since for some reason, most students these days go to sites I'm pretty sure will just rot their brains...

Personally, I do dislike it most of the time. Mostly because nearly every image hosting site I could think of (including TinyPic) has been blocked. I made some cool stuff in The GIMP and wanted to show off some stuff. They also think that the smarter students might set up an IRC server and communicate that way. Yep, any IRC packets have been denied.

Eh, nothing we can do about unless like we have one of those sites that helps get past it, but they end up blocking those also

Proxy sites? Yep, most of them known are blocked. What sucks worse? The fact that "Fun" and "Philosophical Content" are excuses to block sites.

My school blocks the usual. But I mean, I think it is stupid. Blocking sights that can bring viruses in. I agree with, especially anything 18 or older on the internet. Sure, but I believe facebook and games should be unblocked because a person should have the free will to do whatever he or she wants. Especially if they are even on there own laptop that they bring. If they want to waste their time doing that then they can do it. If they work then they will work. That is my theory.

So they should filter sites! You're in school to learn not to play games or look at porn! :facepalm:On a serious note, i think someones already said it... About blocking site that could bring in viruses and what-not. Thats fair enough, viruses just ruin it for everyone. The sites that should be blocked are the obvious ones.-Porn sites, if you're in school you proberly arnt old enough and it would just stop you working.-Terrorism sites, wont go further.-Drug/gang related websites, again i wont go further.Alot of other things, these are the main ones.In my school days, games sites were the pain in the ass. The teachers used to let us go on them if we finished our work, even though they were blocked (always a way around). For things like games websites there should be an easy way for teachers to let people on, by bypassing the filters with a proxy. Why go to school to play games and whatever? You have plenty of time to do it at home! :( (That last statment makes me feel like an old fart, oh my goodness!)

For some things, they should block (Like porn and other sites of that nature) but facebook n stuff they shouldn't block.

I had a schoolmate who actually got around the school's blocking system to install games. Unfortunately he got caught, and ended up with a criminal record since the security settings for the school board were (apparently) so low that by hacking the website blocking system, he also ended up with access to student report cards even though those weren't his intentions.

Judging from some of the posts in this thread, more than a few people could do with their school blocking websites. Clearly, they're spending too much time on them already.
