My school blocks almost everything too, that includes social networking sites like FaceBook, MySpace, Friendster and other similar sites, they also block video-streaming sites like YouTube, Veoh, Google Video etc. The bad thing is, the administrator, the one who uses the main computer enjoys browsing these sites himself ugh...I remembered one day when Google Video was in beta mode and is not that popular, I watched a simple "Caramel Dansen" video of those operating system mascots and of course, it was detected by the admin and he quickly blocked google video, and I couldn't load another vid after I close my current one.... what a sneaky guy he is.

Schools just dont have a clue do they, they just block anything that gets popular so that kids spend less time on the net doing stuff they enjoy and focusing on their work. One of my friends school even tried to block google because they didn't want kids to be able to search for stuff that wasn't school related...Why didn't they just run an intranet?

How dare schools try and force kids to do the work they're meant to and learn things that will be useful to them in later life.

Plenty of grown, successful adults have told me that most of the information that was forced into them during school was and is not useful for them in life at all. Thing is, students should focus on whatever subject they like doing and deal with the rest. If they are interested in looking something up online and find that the website is blocked then that's some serious injustice, in my opinion. If they just want to mess around on the computers, then it's their decision and therefore their problem. Blocking websites does more harm than good to students, in my opinion.

Was that before or after you reminded them that you asked for fries and not onion rings?

Sorta annoying. I always go the school's library and use their internet during my break time.Sometimes, I attempted to open blocked sites, especially Facebook. Usually, I fail...

I see a point when schools block websites: They try their best to make sure students use their computers for work and only work and that viruses aren't put on the computers. However, there are many ways to get around the proxies, such as using a hacking software to find the unblock password, subscribe to unblocked forums, or make a copy of whatever you are trying to use and put it on a flash drive (i.e. StarCraft or emulators, if they want to play games). Personally, I am both for and against schools blocking websites because of the reasons I listed above, but if you don't have a computer and you stay after school to check e-mail and other things, then you should have the right to do so, as long as you don't go too far with those privileges.

I think it is annoying that they block some websites but I see what their intensions are. It will help students stay focused on school work. The whole point of having internet at the school is for "educational purposes" and unblocking all sites is not the main intention for the school.I would let it be so that it would prevent viruses and hackers (or make it harder) to break into the school network and steal private info.

i think they should because with new technology coming people can use the ipod touch to get the wifi and go on inappropriate sites. so it should be blocked for sure

I hate it and they shouldn't block it, though through the use of a proxy server I get around it anyways.

Replying only to OP here, not the three pages of replies.I understand it in high school and below. Especially given the fact that with our school system lately, kids never want to be in school to begin with. Therefore, the administrators have to start by punishing the kids before they get a chance to step out of line: it's the same mentality that allows for metal detectors and uniforms, honestly. Therefore, by limiting the students' scopes, they can do more towards their true goal, which is of course the indoctrination of these poor individuals into quiet, obedient adults.Anywhere else, I don't like it.

I think its stupid because either way some websites are not blocked, like cube field. So if they sont take the time to block minor site, why block the others?

I'm fine with it, really. I only use the school computers when I HAVE to (because they suck so much) and I don't play games when I have something more important to do.

We always managed to find loopholes in our school system and would just use the old USB port to put in any game we wanted to play and have a massive Co-Op in the 6th form room....Ah, good times...Site wise, never really had an issue because I never seeked anything outside of school related sites....:v

At grade schools (k-12) I'm fine with it....the structure there allows for it....at colleges...it makes no sense whatsoever.

It wasn't exactly me, but someone I knew in middle school was doing a project on... I think it was "drug abuse?" I remember the word "abuse" was on there.Anyway, the schools refused to let anyone search anything about drugs, even for health class...It was stupid and she had waste time at home instead of using her school time, for school.

The blocking at schools is really annoying for students, but the schools probably have a very good reason to block them. For example, particularly mischievous little kids may go to websites that have viruses, and the school would have to fix those computers. If each computer had a virus, it would take a long time for the school to fix them. Also, blocking websites prevents the students from wasting time on non-educational activities.
